Q I’m fascinated by the connection between you, your dad [Dick Johnson] and Mitch Leidner, since your dad coached him in high school at Lakeville South. How do you use that relationship — and your Minnesota roots — to your advantage in this job?

A I think it will definitely benefit me. I’ve been away for quite some time, but seeing this evolve through the decades, from going to games at Memorial Stadium and many games at the Dome to now being here, I think there’s that connection. My dad being a longtime high school coach, having that network and familiarity is important. When someone says “Lakeville” or “Waseca” or “Hibbing,” I know what they’re talking about.

Q You have Leidner for a year as a senior. Head coach Tracy Claeys is on a three-year contract, but it’s almost a trial year. Does that create an urgency for you in Year 1 of this job?

A I think there’s always an urgency. That’s the way as a college football coach you approach things in this day and age. For me to come back here is maybe even more of an urgency because I want to see this program do well. I grew up being a fan.

Q The raw materials with Leidner are there. He’s a big, mobile quarterback. How do you get him up to speed with what you want to do in one year and turn him into a more finished product?

A It’s hard to know because I don’t know entirely how they’ve approached things, but I think more than anything it’s “reduce, simplify and let him play.” If we can do that and really put him in that same position in every play from a fundamentals standpoint, we’ll see his abilities blossom even more.

Go Gophers!!

I would also take whatever it was Limey and Z were doing with Mitch and make sure those ideas never see the light of day apparently.

Go Gophers!!

I'm impressed. It has been my experience that most people from Lakeville have no idea where Waseca is. Of course, I live in Waseca county and I refuse to acknowledge Waseca's existence!

yes, lime and z were at fault for Mitcheroo's inability to read defense, hit a receiver in stride, clock a ball.

he seemed to be doing just fine without them two in the bowl game... btw I think everyone the has seem him play the last two years would
say ive seen an improvement in that last game..

Things we will never know - if coaching was an issue, would Leidner have been a better player with better or different coaching.

It will be very interesting to see what happens next year with a new OC and QB coach. If Leidner does take a step forward in terms of performance, then that would certainly seem to indicate that coaching may in fact have been an issue for some of Leidner's inconsistencies or shortcomings.

No matter what happens, we know that wait!what? has his mind made up. Leidner could win the Heisman trophy, and wait!what? would still be on here criticizing his play.

He would have been much better with a good OL and a healthy one. One could put the quality of the OL on Matt L.

He did do a better job when he was healthy and he's looked pretty bad when he wasn't. The fact that there hasn't been a quality back-up QB behind him is all on the Coaching Staff. Which may or may not have been another reason for the staff shake-up.

I'd go a step further and say if Mitch becomes an NFL draft pick, he would still be considered the biggest pos QB this program has ever had by the supposedly greatest QB mind on GH.

why does the article state 'Jay Johnson hopes to help Mitch Leidner blossom'. a 4th yr starter who needs to blossom?

By "blossom" the writer meant "gain wait!what?'s approval".

I don't even know where to start, with what things are wrong with that sentence...

Way to follow it up with your own terrible grammar.

Mitch looked better late in the season after Tracy took over and the Limegrover left. I look forward to see if that continues.

I'd love for you to explain exactly what is improper about the sentence... Aaaand go...

There you go.

Edit. I'll leave it at that. No need to derail this thread with more grammar discussion.

To the topic of the thread - my guess is Mitch will improve next year. A lot of that could just be due to being healthy (assuming he can stay healthy). I already like what I've heard from the new OC about adapting the offense to the players. It will hopefully play to Mitch's strengths.

You got me... Commas have always been my weakness. (And writing in the parenthetical). Lol.

Put Leidner out at TE where he should have been playing a long time ago and start developing a real quarterback.
"Brick By Brick" never meant throwing the bricks that he does...
He could be the next Maxx Williams if he wanted to - there is no way he would make it in the NFL as a QB.

LOL

Leidner could have a game where he somehow completes 25 passes in only 20 attempts and people will still rip him for something.

He has never played TE, how do we know he would be that good?

You mean like the Quick Lane Bowl?
