"Last year was more hands on, practicing, implementing system, and learning how the guys worked," assistant coach Dan McHale said. "This year is more individual workouts, getting the guys stronger. It's been really good."

The early efforts are already showing. Several of the players have put on significant beneficial weight. DeAndre Mathieu has added in excess of ten pounds to his compact frame. Martin has packed on seven pounds of muscle in the short time he's been in Dinkytown. Joey King has put on more than 20 since this time last season. Morris, however, wins the prize for the summer so far, having tipped the scale by 16 pounds since arriving over Memorial Day weekend.

"A Shaun Brown special," said McHale, referencing the Gophers basketball strength and conditioning coach, who has each player on an individual program based on their needs.

Only the two foreign newcomers have yet to arrive. McHale said he hopes Mali native Bakary Konate, who is still in Kansas, and power forward and Senegal native Gaston Diedhiou, who is still in the Canary Islands, where he played last year, will arrive by mid July. Both are simply dealing with "a little international red tape," McHale said.

Go Gophers!!

Kansas is international?

Travelers, what would be holding up Bakary from moving Kansas to Minnesota? Are school Visa's location specific?

Great news. Between this and Mo's transformation, I think our trainer is really underrated.

If Joey King really put on 20 lbs of muscle, you can only assume that is going to help his rebounding efforts. He got shoved under the basket a lot last year. If he can hold his box outs, you already know he isn't going to get outworked for the ball. Great to hear.

I'd love to get an update on Mo. Hopefully he is adding strength to help him finish down low, and some lateral quickness to improve his D.

He was in Kansas on a student visa and can't change schools without a new student visa being issued...so it doesn't matter where he is living, he has the same red tape as if he wasn't in country already.

Thats what I was kind of assuming. Gratzie

I feel better knowing that Joel Maturi isn't in charge of these types of things anymore.

20 lbs seems like a lot for Joey King. He really doesn't seem to have the body type where I would have thought he needed to put on any bulk.

Respectfully disagree. His body type and basketball persona had "bulk up" written all over it. He needs more bulk and strength to compete as a power forward. He doesn't jump very high. He's not too fast. The best way for him to better compete is through mass and strength. He had fairly narrow shoulders, fairly narrow arms. Twenty pounds evenly distributed over a guy that is already 6-7, 6-8 is not that much and will allow him to bang for more rebounds, since we won't be out-jumping people.

20 pounds puts him at 6'9" 245 lbs...or roughly the same size as Kevin Love

What's the over/under on Charles Buggs gaining weight...

Bob, I was surprised by the 20 lbs. also. Big difference in the shoulders and upper arms last season between Oto and Joey, so I did wonder if he had ever had much weight training. Joey will probably never be a banger, but the additional weight will help. I'm a big fan of his.

I don't believe he is 6-9 and I dont believe he was 225 last year. He could use some upper body muscle for sure. I wouldnt doubt he could be 230 this year if he harldy lifted previously, and finally fell in love with the weight room.

It was said he has been hitting the weights hard for couple years now.

Also don't think he is a legit 6'-9". Oto and Buggs had 1-2" on him.

"Oto and Buggs had 1-2" on him."

Now we know how Oto snagged the hot chick LOL.

A lot of people must have glossed over the bolded part. He could've come in 205 pounds, gained 15 before the season started last year, lost 5-10 in season, and put on another 15 since the season ended.
