per the STrib:

“Richard’s a lot different than me — he takes his summers drinking piña coladas,” he said. Chuckles from the media in attendance encouraged the Cardinals coach — a wide smirk crossing his face — to continue. “We go to work,” Rick went on. “We’re cut from a different cloth. He’s out there right now on the beach somewhere. We’re not doing that.”

The son wasn’t tempted to take the bait when contacted for a retort on Wednesday. But based on the evidence, it seems Pop doesn’t quite have his facts straight.

The younger Pitino, according to a blog he posted earlier on Wednesday, had his players in the gym at 6 a.m. for a surprise workout.

Courier Journal: Richard Pitino not having his dad's mind games

His son, who was on the road recruiting Thursday afternoon, wasn't having any of that. In fact, he doesn't expect direct smack talk until the game date is, you know, not four months away.

"I have no clue what that was about," Richard told The Courier-Journal on Thursday. "He must be bored."

Once the actual game comes, the younger Pitino said he and his dad will both be so focused on their teams that the game itself will be less about the head-to-head coaching matchup and more about their teams.

"You're not really coaching against the other coach," he said. "It's not as big of a chess match as everybody thinks it is. We're really at two different stages in our careers. This is a great opportunity for the country to see what Minnesota basketball is all about. It gives us great exposure. Certainly the big story line will be me vs. my father, but it's not about that to our teams."
