per Joe:

Former Gophers and Rutgers quarterback Philip Nelson plans to restart his college football career this fall at South Alabama, his father said in an e-mail Thursday.

South Alabama, which is located in Mobile, established its football program in 2009 and competes in the Football Championship Subdivision, formerly known as Division I-AA. The Jaguars went 6-7 last season, losing to Bowling Green in the Camellia Bowl. Their non-conference schedule this fall includes games at Nebraska, San Diego State and North Carolina State.

Go Gophers!!

Joe C and Amelia are great writers. They're great and they write great feature/spotlight stories. They write nice "human interest" stories and stuff like that too.

But does the Star Tribune not hire writers who are competent about the sport they cover? Joe C says South Alabama is in the FCS, which is wrong, and I think most college football fans could have told you this because they just started a football game. But then he went on to say that they lost to Bowling Green in the Camelia Bowl. FCS teams don't have bowls and they certainly don't play in FBS Bowls. That's just embarrassing on behalf of the Star Tribune.

Does South Alabama have a fight song?

Have been down to USA a few times. They have an expanding medical program, many new buildings. They are actively trying to raise the bar there. Hope he does well, stays out of trouble, and graduates.

Least surprising part of this story: his daddy is the source.

Getting the facts right the first time has become a lost art in the 5-minute news cycle of the "Interweb" era. Being factually correct? "Why bother?" seems to be the modern-day approach to accurate reporting.

This isn't even bad research though, these are facts that one would expect sports writers to know simply by virtue of their existing knowledge.

Off topic, but itching to say it: Rapid egestion of garbage in this social media era is what counts. You can always leave the garbage for someone else to clean up. :horse: (horse manure pile)

Hopefully he doesn't go assaulting every guy in Alabama that looks at his girl.

So facts another question

If it is an FBS school, why would he be able to play this fall?

Is Southern Alabama under the Alabama System's control? See UAB. See Paul Bryant, Jr.

Hope he can turn his life around.

Eh. I never root against anyone, but really find myself indifferent on what happens to PN9 from here on out.

When Nelson committed to the Gophers, I remember how excited people were about his potential (and about the fact that the Gophs got a QB who had been rumored to be considering WI.)

And now we come to this chapter in the Story.

Just goes to show you that we have to be careful when hyping recruits or getting too excited about potential. Potential is wonderful - but the athlete has to be able to do the right things to realize their potential on the field, and also has to be able to do the right things off the field.

I know Nelson has his defenders - I am not one of them. I hope he is able to end his career with some success, but I am not going to be checking out box scores from Southern Alabama to see how he is doing. (although I would not be surprised if someone starts a thread on here to report on how he is doing.......)

Looks like Phil won't be playing at South Alabama after all... http://247sports.com/Bolt/Phillip-Nelson-Not-Joining-South-Alabama-Program-37112801

Sources have confirmed to JagsJungle that former Minnesota and Rutgers QB Phillip Nelson will not be joining the South Alabama program.

Nelson played for the Golden Gophers for two years before transferring to Rutgers. During his redshirt year there, he was involved in an altercation in which another man suffered brain injuries. Nelson eventually agreed to 100 hours of community service and pled guilty to fifth degree assault.

South Alabama administrators considered allowing him to enroll and participate in football but decided against it.

I saw something on 247(I think) saying that PN is not going to be playing football at USA after all.

I'm still waiting for his dad to send out an email to confirm.

Looks like JG was a little quicker posting the PN update

Hmm. The similarities between Phillip Nelson, the Garbage Barge, and the exiled Shah of Iran are quite striking, as each of them are/were pariahs on the strangest of odysseys to find someone, anyone who would take them.

So the Strib published wrong information? Why am I not surprised? I wonder if they'll act like a real newspaper and print a retraction.

Do you think his dad making it public before it became official was a major issue? Maybe some Southern Alabama people caught wind and were upset? All conjecture here.

not likely, dad was probably trying to trick USC every other BCS school that they might lose Pnels if they don't offer soon.

No retraction yet.

Perhaps USA saw film of Phil's bounce passes and decided he wasn't worth the hassle.

On a serious note: anytime you're caught in the midst of situation like that, you consider yourself fortunate and invisibly move on. PN's dad is making a terrible mistake by keeping him in the news like this.
