University of Minnesota officials recently submitted to the NCAA a "progress-toward-degree waiver" on Al Nolen's behalf, and the NCAA is still gathering information, according to Erik Christianson, the NCAA's director of public relations.
Nolen, the starting point guard for the Gophers and the Big Ten's steals leader, was declared academically ineligible Tuesday, the first day of spring semester, according to people familiar with his situation. Nolen likely will miss Saturday's key matchup against Michigan State, according to people aware of his academic standing, and the junior could miss the entire second semester, depending on the outcome of the waiver request.
The NCAA requires student athletes to make incremental progress toward graduation each year. A waiver can be submitted on behalf of a student-athlete who doesn't meet those requirements. But the university has to present "evidence of compelling mitigating circumstances along with a reasonable expectation for the student-athlete to recover academically for the waiver request to be granted," according to the NCAA's website.
According to a person familiar with the situation, Nolen dealt with "extenuating family circumstances" during the first semester.
"The NCAA is working with the university to gather the appropriate information for this progress-toward-degree waiver," Christianson said Thursday via e-mail. "You may be aware that Division I student-athletes must meet term-by-term academic requirements and earn 20 percent of their degree each year to remain eligible for competition.
