per Joe:

Coach Jerry Kill has raved about his redshirt freshmen quartet. Offensive coordinator Matt Limegrover was more measured when I spoke to him this week.

“I know Coach [Kill] is pretty high on them, and I can see why,” Limegrover said. “Are they going to be complete receivers on April 11? Probably not. Are they going to be complete receivers on Sept. 1? Probably not. You’ve got to get through the growing pains with them, let them work against a darn good secondary for the next six months.”

That's a great point about the secondary. These receivers will need to be good if they're going to catch passes against the likes of Eric Murray, Briean Boddy-Calhoun, Jalen Myrick and Craig James. The Gophers would put those cornerbacks up against anybody.

"[The redshirt freshmen receivers] work really hard," Limegrover said. "They put in extra time with the quarterbacks, and hopefully that’s going to pay off. We’ll see exactly how far they’ve come obviously in the spring, but they’re doing the right things.

"All of them have the potential to be very complete receivers. ... One of them probably will [emerge] a little quicker than the others. I can’t sit here and say right now which one that will be. One will impress a little bit sooner, one may take a little longer. But the one that takes longer, maybe by the end of his career, he'll be the one that continues to steadily increase and becomes the best one of the group.

"It’s just hard to say who that is at this point. I just like watching them run around, that’s for sure."

Go Gophers!!

Well, as long as Limegrover doesn't hold the offense back... we should see a big improvement.

Bingo!!!! Over half the battle is to get Limey to call a pass.

The coaches and specifically Limegrover were not holding back the passing game, lack of talent and execution were holding back the passing game. It won't take much for these new receivers to be an upgrade over what we have been running out there the past few seasons. Will be interesting to see if any of them turn out to be real weapons at the position.

Exactly! If you look at the history of our coaching staff they had no problem calling pass plays when they had the talent to do so. The only thing Limegrover is guilty of is calling the plays that gave us the best chance to win games. That is what good coaches do.

I am very excited for the spring game/spring pactices to see Holland, Gentry, Jerry Gibson and Gant. Really hoping for some noticeable upgrades in WR and I am hopefuly that these young guys can provide that.

Agree. The offense is overachieving compared to our overall talent. I mean we have had almost zero good WRs the past two years and look at what we have done. Let's save the criticizing of the coordinator until we have an abundance of talent and don't produce.

Yup, I think they have done pretty well with what they have at the skill positions.

One thing I think needs to get worked on-and this may be a criticism of Limegrover- is our two minute or hurry up offense. I think that's a legit concern to have.

I agree that our effeciency/execution in the two minute offense left much to be desired last year but overall I can't complain all too much about the play calling while also understanding that this is a run first offense. I feel the pass plays that we "missed out" on last year mainly come from the action of a run that turns to a pass/run possibility. There were plenty of traditional play action passes and I am not referring to those, but more of the read option plays that have routes downfield to catch safties playing too close to the line of scrimmage.

I have no sweeping criticism of the play calling but personally would love to see some of the jet sweep PA passes that can go over the top with 1 on 1 coverage because defenses are crashing down to stop the read option.

That is okay as long as you do it in two minutes or less.

This will come with the personnel. Most hurry up situations, outside of trying to get an advantage, mean you are behind and may need more passing. When your best pass catchers are TE's it's hard to do. Got to be able to stretch the field.

Good point, and your absolutely right. Our personnel limitations weren't conducive to the hurry-up.

Though, it seemed like their were some times where we looked really, really lost/uncomfortable in the hurry up in between plays, burning a lot of clock, and confusion. That's something I'd like to see progress on this year.

Totally agree. We even had a tough time completing deep thrown footballs when our WR's would have a few steps on a guy. From the timing of jumping for the football (D.Jones), loosing the ball in the sun (fruechte(sp?) ) and how far down field the football was thrown all had an effect on that. We just couldn't do it.

Alot of it could fall under miscommunication? In the two minute, it's gonna be frantic and their will be some miscommunication, I just hope we look a little more practiced at it next season.

Their are things that can be fixed through talent maybe like dropping balls or not highpointing it, and things that have less to do with talent and more to do with practice and coaching emphasis, like the miscommunication and clock burning.

Agree again minbeaver. Hopefully coaching & talent will win out this time over things like attrition and clock mismanagement.

The good news is that our deep misses last year all went beyond the receivers. It will be a lot harder for Mitch to overthrow height and speed; these guys should be able to go get it.

DJ4 had both height and speed.

And that's all.

Sure thing. He was a disappointment. However, my comment was to the post that in 2015 ML7 will have a tougher time overthrowing our receivers on the long ball as we will have height and speed at that position. Seemed like an important point that we had that last year too, don't ya think?
