STrib: Leidner takes his game to another level against Iowa

Gosh where are all those people bashing Coach Z after the illinois loss?..... What a game by Leidner today. And he THREW THE BALL AWAY TWICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

His two best games, vs Mich and vs Iowa. Two big trophy games.

Let's hope there's another vs Wisco

I recall posting that I saw signs that he could be an All-B1G QB if he continues to improve. I just looked and Iowa is still No. 2 in B1G pass defense. Isn't 10-13 for 138, 4 TDs, no picks, and two intentional throw aways worthy of some love from all those ML7 haters? Leading rusher in the game with 77 on 11 carries. C'mon. You know who you are. Speak up!

While we're at it, how about those posters who thought we'd lose our last five?

Leidner had good legs too yesterday, here's to his health the rest of the year.

He had some good runs, I was more impressed with his movement in the pocket though. For the first time he would step up/sideways and keep his eyes down field at the same time. Whatever he ate for breakfast yesterday he needs to repeat for the rest of the season.

Bacon.

Pretty good press for a guy who wouldn't start at Augustana.

100% agree. I think my favorite Leidner play yesterday was a scramble on 3rd down. He dropped back and looked down field, didn't see anything, stepped up calmly and scrambled for the first down. Typically he would take a sack there or throw one up for grabs. His rate of improvement is very encouraging.

What I was most impressed with was his decision making to not turn the ball over.

Seems like the decision making is finally clicking for him. If he plays disciplined, makes good instinctual football decisions, keeps his eyes focused down field and sets his feet like yesterday he has even more potential to get better every week. He threw the ball away instead of taking a sack yesterday, zero turnovers, and that was very encouraging.
To beat Ohio State, were going to have to be able to mix in a short passing game, where we block it up well and can hit some quick dig routs to the tight ends, and quick outs and some inside slant routes. Leidner and the wide receivers need to work on the short passing game this week, he can do it ML7, he just has to relax when making those quick read throws and the receivers have to come out of their breaks well. Of course with the base offense, the Gophers will need to run out of power formations and be what they are, but we can really get them off balance if we can mix in a few quick rhythm throws. I was impressed with David Cobbs blocking yesterday to set the edge for the KJ Maye jet sweeps, Ohio State is going to be a big challenge we all know that, but the Gophers have a chance to spring the upset.
Ohio State is a very talented football team, I know they have a quarterback that can really run and throw the football right now out of the spread, and that defense can bang but coming off the big win yesterday, I have to think the Gophers have a chance.

I think the crawled down a Gopher Hole and are hibernating.

How did you reach this conclusion? Film study? Has that scheme worked against OSU? I'm not saying you're wrong, just wondering. I'm pretty confident the coaches know our skill set and how to apply it to what can be successful against the buckeyes.

I didn't suggest that the coaches did not know the skill set and how to apply it.

Ohio State is really tough on edges and the middle of their defense as far as the run goes. Where they, the Buckeyes look vulnerable are some dump off middle screens to the running backs, because they get up the field so quickly, and what they look like they will give you is quick slants inside, tight end dig routes and quick out routes to the flankers and running backs. You do look like you can dink and dunk them and use the Buckeyes aggression against them. They play with a real chip on their shoulders and talent wise on paper they should be better. They have seen Max Williams enough, and that counter action, delay screen inside rub route now that you know they are going to try there dangdest to take him out of the game. Williams has a target on his back and Ohio State is going after him you can bank on that, I would even bet they will play extra hard to rough him up and try and go after Maxx to get him out of the football game because he is such a dynamic play-maker.
I did not suggest the Gophers go away from what they do well, they will have to run the football and execute some of the traps, pulling plays and power runs they run. Ohio State is going to overplay the jet sweep to Maye now and some times they really bear down on you when you try to run the read option from the end and the defensive tackle spot, they crash down and get under your pads quicker than anyone I have seen, making it difficult for the QB to be able to execute taking the ball or handing it off, they make the decision you have to make much quicker for that than anyone I have seen. They have SEC like quickness on defense, it's not hyperboyle to say it either you can see it with your own eyes.
Your quarterbacks and tailbacks have to be exceptionally quick to get by them on the edge or even for your offensive line to be able to set the edge or get push on them up front because they are both extremely quick and have some big dudes in the middle. Ohio States defensive tackles are big like the Purdue guys but the Ohio State guys can really move, they run both off the edge and in the middle and there ends have some serious length making it easier for them to close down. I have watched them enough to know they have legit SEC like quickness like you see from an Auburn or Alabama.

This is by far the quickest defense I have seen this season, make no mistake they are extremely talented a lot faster than any defense we have faced with the possible exception of TCU, you can see it, they flash and get up the field quicker than anyone the Gophers have faced so far even TCU who had a great front four. I think the Gophers have a chance to compete but remember this we have beaten them 7 times out of 43 historically and have not beaten Ohio State at home since 1981. I just don't see long developing plays or things that take a long time, long post routes or long boundary fade patterns having a lot of time to be executed. Our offensive line has stepped up but they will only be able to hold so long. There is going to have to be quick rhythm stuff and things where you eat away at them and hog the ball in order to have success. I don't think they will be over looking the Gophers like I had hoped, the 51-14 score has those guys coaches attention, and they are playing for trying to get in the final four conversation. It's going to take a clean effort like yesterday but the Gophers are going to have to be able to execute some stuff the Buckeyes have not seen. I hope Limegrover has some tricks up his sleeves like he did for Nebraska last year. In fact I would bring back some of that movement and triple stacks on the edge, and surprise eligible receiver stuff, you can confuse them a little bit with motion and those odd looks. Just one guys opinion, not worth much I'm sure, but I am confident the coaches will have some stuff cooked up that give the Gophers a chance to win and compete hard. It is going to be a fun football game, I hope so anyways. Ohio State is the measuring stick in the Big 10 conference, if you cannot get jacked up to watch them and your team compete against them your not a college football fan.

Nice analysis.... something I would love to see also (5% chance) is about a half dozen no- huddle plays.... I think that would surprise the H out of osu and create just a bit off balance doubt...

I haven't seen a lot of OSU, but believe there are many ways to exploit them and score points. Not out of the question the Gophers can put up 30+ on them.

I think execution is the key to our success, not so much surprise. We have enough talent to expose defenses and make them make choices. If ML7 continues to improve, I think we can win out.

Your analysis is so far over my head, I can barely tell what language you're speaking. Having said that, it seems to me that what needs to happen for us to win this game is stuff Coach Kill talks about lot. 1. We must win the field position battle. If we lose that battle, game over. 2. We must turn these guys over at least twice in their own territory; 3. We can't turn the ball over more than once; 4. We need a big special teams play, or two. 5. We cannot take more than a few penalties and no personal fouls; 6. We need to contain their QB. If he runs around at will, we're done. We can't be all jacked up and over-pursue; 7. We can't go three and out more than once or twice. If we do, game over. Therefore, just like you pointed out, we must introduce new wrinkles. We've got to confuse them. If we can't outrun them, we'll need to be where they aren't. Cobb and the o-line will need an incredible game. We must eat clock and keep the ball out of OSU's hands. We have to ground and pound. We'd undoubtedly lose big time in a Donnybrook.

Just my two cents and how I can envision a victory over tOSU. Some day, I hope we have the pound-for-pound talent they have to go toe-to-toe. I really don't like Urban Meyer, and I can't tell you why. Probably because I don't like smugness and guys who seem to have it all. If we beat them, our staff deserves a nice bonus.

I hope we don't see any no huddle because the only way we will is if we are running out of time and need to score a bunch. Kill wants to shorten the game always. If you're playing a great opponent, the fewer times they get the ball, the less damage they can do. That way we are always in the game because of our defense. It is also why we run so much. It also helps if you aren't as deep as your opponent…if there are fewer plays in a game, your starters will be out there for a greater percentage of them. So let's hope we don't see a no huddle offense.

Think Nebraska game last year, our staff and especially coach Limegrover had some really innovative formations and motion stuff that had Nebraska confused, baffled and running around with their heads cut off the whole game last year. I'm not saying replicate or duplicate but we had some good stuff we had not shown before.
The Gophers really had the Huskers off balance, and looking lost the whole football game. I am hoping they have some tricks up there sleeves that will keep Ohio State dazed and confused and off balance on defense. You look like you can do some stuff on the offensive side of the ball that will confuse those guys defense just enough to keep them on there heels a little bit. Goes without saying that the Gophers are stepping up in class this coming weekend and will have to be at maximum effort to spring the upset. Ohio State is playing for final four consideration now that they jumped up to 7 or 8, so they will come ready to play. Man I hope it is cold as heck out because I dont think those guys will enjoy the miserable cold conditions as much as our guys will be able to handle it. We should be abe to relish it because of entusiasm even if it sucks that it is going to be cold.
Gophers are playing for a chance to stay in first place and a conference championship for the first time in many generations and have just as much to play for in my opionion, I think we can hang in a donnybrook and hope we can out last them. Dream big Gophers and SKI-U-Mah

I realize its a waste of time to think this way and there's nothing that can be done about it, but I've learned a lot on Gopherhole about the "big business" aspect of college football. It's something that I was never attuned to before. So here is my thought: I really wonder if the referees for Saturday's game will be on the up and up. If we beat tOSU, they're out of the playoff and so is the B1G, correct? I look for some bad calls to go the other way and for Coach Kill to go absolutely ape sh#t. Just a feeling I have. If I'm wrong, I want everyone on GH to tell me how moronic I am. But if I'm right, I'd like to be nominated for an ESPY award. No, not that ESPY award. The other little known ESPY award: the Extra Sensory Perception award for college football prognostications.

I've played with conspiracy theories plenty, but just can't accept this. I do think some folks have more than their share of 'bad luck.' I expect the Gophers to get some bad calls and bad bounces Saturday. I also expect us not to panic and overcome them, making the win even sweeter.
