per the STrib:

The Gophers are 2-1 against FCS opponents under Kill. They defeated Western Illinois 29-12 last year and crushed New Hampshire 44-7 two years ago, but they lost to North Dakota State in 2011.

The Gophers also lost twice against FCS opponents under Tim Brewster, to NDSU in 2007 and to South Dakota in 2010.

“I know our kids understand it,” Kill said. “Of course, you can go back to North Dakota State — you better understand it. North Dakota State beat [Kansas] State last year. So a lot of people don’t understand that in I-AA, they have a lot of good players. Just look at the NFL.”

Go Gophers!!

It would be nice to see NDSU back on the schedule for a little revenge. Brewster teams ran into a buzzsaw. NDSU deserved those wins as they wanted it more and played a much better brand of football (as much as I hate to admit it).

Father in-law is a Bison and it gags me each time I head over to their house.

Would be awesome if a mod would just go ahead and kill this thread now. Nothing more annoying on this board than when a freaking und fighting flicktail topic gets posted to bring out the trolls and drum up the same stupid conversations for the 1000th time.

If no one else replies to this thread beyond my post here does it really exist and will it just magically disappear?! One can hope. ;)

Yeah, Joe C. tweeted this and the NDSU respect cops came out in full force. They're a fun group.

The Gopher teams that lost to the Dakota teams were 1-11, 3-9 and 3-9. This isn't 2007, 2010 or 2011.

I hope we never schedule any FCS teams again, there are plenty of FBS teams to play you shouldn't have to go down a level to find an opponent.

Agreed. We won't be pretty soon, right?

Yep, pretty sure the Big Ten is sticking with the no FCS policy. I like it because for the most part they are garbage games. The very top of the FCS has some very solid teams that can give BCS teams a run for their money and even beat them from time to time but the talent level drops off quick once you get past the cream of the crop and most of those games are glorified practices against an opponent that has no shot to compete.

I agree with this entire post 100%.

"Time to time" was defined as 16 FCS wins over FBS teams last year. 7 wins vs the BCS AQ conference teams. You're always going to have a couple cupcakes on the schedule, especially if you're good. Just make sure it's 2 cupcakes and not 4 like we had last year.

Playing those teams is high risk, low (or no) reward. If you beat them, it's no accomplishment. If it's close, it's worrisome. If you lose, it's a tragedy. Add in that you have to pay them to show up and it's a loser deal.

I understand what you're saying but I hate this defense of Gopher FCS losses. "Its not just FCS teams we lost to, we lost to everybody".

Still a buzzsaw, nothings changed there. MN better off just pretending they are superior to ndsu every year, but not having to prove it.

It took you almost 24 hours...disappointing.

Oh, not every year. We will freely admit that in years that NDSU is very good, with zero or one loss they can beat a Minnesota team that has three or fewer wins. Congratulations. Minnesota fans will never be able to match NDSU fans in arrogance. If NDSU had a bad year, they could lose to a D-II team. Does that mean you have something to prove towards D-II?

Since NDSU has proven self worthy, why not move up a level? That way you could prove yourself worthy on an annual basis.

Surprised more little green men haven't shown up.

Meaningless wins over crappy Brewster teams and Kills first year.
NDSU must be comfortable dominating FCS, makes them feel important in the college football landscape. They would never invest the money to move up to FBS level football as there reputation and egos would get bruised. Play a major conference schedule and you can talk all you want if you stay at that level.

For the last couple years have thought NDSU would be a good fit for the Mountain West. Still think it's a move they should consider if the MWC ever makes the offer. Solid "non Power of 5" conference & NDSU seems to have a strong overall athletic program. Certainly its football & men's basketball programs have stepped up to the plate, and those are the ones that matter the most. NDSU certainly couldn't be any worse than Hawaii or San Jose State.

Norwood was on the radio with Reusse the other day talking about how worried he would be if he were in the Mountain West with the new autonomy for the power 5 coming in 2015. There might be some combination of the lower half of the FBS with the upper half of the FCS.

Isn't there a waiting period on them now to move up again since they just moved to FCS in 2004 or 2005 (can't remember which)

MN had the undisciplined, poorly coached teams under Brewster and the team that Kill inherited. They got their butts handed to them by a very good well coached FCS team full of MN kids that had lots to prove for being shunned by the home state school.

So yea, B1G teams have lots to lose playing against FCS in terms of national rankings. That is why I think Delaney took his stand.

Don't get me wrong. FCS schools have some very good players like Tony Romo who went to Eastern Illinois. NDSU did sent some players to the NFL too.

Coach Kill is not taking Eastern Illinois lightly at all. I am fearful of a let down. Based on reports from the football practices, we've improved a lot. However, this game against Eastern Illinois looms bigger if we lose to them.

That is what I hate about these games. The best we can possibly do is show up and roll over them for four quarters, in which case we have impressed no one because all we did is do what we are supposed to against a lower tier opponent. Conversely, it is catastrophic if we lose. A lot of us are very excited and optimistic about this season (myself included), but can you imagine what a dagger in the heart it would be to the fan base if we drop a game to EIU, MTSU, or SJSU? I propose a new rule: no games against teams with four words in their school name, unless that fourth word is tOSU's pretentious "the".

I get what you're saying, but I will certainly be impressed if we come out and roll over them for four quarters. Not only if EIU better than most people think, but it would represent the first time one of Kill's MN teams when out and completely dominated for four quarters.

The 44-7 win over New Hampshire in 2012 looked pretty dominating. 16-7 after one quarter, 40-7 at the half. NH was a decent FCS team that year.
