Former Gophers coach Jerry Kill said in a radio interview that he’s “positive” Tracy Claeys will be named the team’s permanent head coach “in the next couple weeks.”

“I know Coach Claeys is going to do a great job,” Kill told Southern Illinois broadcaster Mike Reis on Saluki Radio. “I’m very hopeful and positive that here in the next couple weeks he’ll be hired as the head coach permanently, and we’ll see.”

Kill said he’s had “several” job offers.

“My answer’s been the same: ‘When I feel like talking about something, I’ll get back to you. Now’s not the time.’ People have been very cordial about that.

“I just have to figure out what’s the best step in Coach Kill’s life, what’s best for his family. I’m not going to be a head coach. I can promise that you now. The only thing maybe would be quality control, off the field, where your hours are controlled.

“I had one coach call me and say, ‘You can name your hours. We’d just like to have you on your staff for your ideas.’ … It’s way too early, and I’ve got to get right. We’ll see.”

I think ol' Joe is mixing up some of his definitions of "positive" here. From the context I take it to mean that he is feeling positive (showing optimism and confidence) that Claey's will be named head coach, not positive (with no possibility of doubt; clear and definite) he will be named coach.

I'm positive that you're positive that Kill is feeling positive.

Yep, the headline and the direct quote don't quite match up.

I sure hope Kill stays connected with this team as this coaching transition happens. I think having Kill stop by now and then, and address the players a few more times, would be smart and helpful.

I hope Kill has some kind of ongoing relationship with the university.

But his value to our football team is as the public face and leader of the team. And he can't be that anymore.
 

If Kill takes a QC or consulting job with any other university, I'd be pretty darn disappointed. I guess moving back closer to family in Kansas would make sense, but it'd still be a bummer...
 



My money is on his family staying here. That would mean a job here in Minnesota. Just my guess.
 


Keep in mind that despite his "awww shucks" persona, Kill is no dummy. This could all be part of a negotiating ploy with the University done through the media.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it.

I don't think this will happen. His staff was loyal to him and I believe he will be loyal to them.
 




Kill is the man, I can see him with a "Master Advisor" title.
