University of Minnesota President Eric Kaler said he plans to begin a search for a new athletic director after the first of the year and that he’s leaning against using an outside search firm this time.

Kaler shared some insight into his plans after a special Board of Regents meeting Tuesday in which the findings of an investigation into sexual harassment claims against former athletic director Norwood Teague were revealed, as well as a financial audit of the athletic department.

Kaler said he hopes to hire Teague’s replacement by July 1. Kaler appointed Beth Goetz interim athletic director after Teague’s abrupt resignation in August.

Kaler indicated Tuesday that he has more expertise in college athletics now so he doesn’t feel compelled to use a search firm.

“I am a much more experienced president than I was when I searched for Teague,” he said. “I have a lot of contacts in the college athletics world now. I’m chairman of the Big Ten board of directors. I think there’s less of a need to use a search firm like Parker than there was four years ago.”

Kaler suggested he’s inclined to assemble his own search committee, presumably made up of different constituents within the university and athletic department. He noted that a broad-based internal committee poses potential problems with confidentiality and scheduling, but he sounded open to that idea.

Go Gophers!!

July 1? That seems like a really long time to take now that the investigation results have been released. I guess there isn't the immediate need of hiring a new AD to get a football coach in place but the U will essentially be going almost a full year with and interim athletic director. Goetz probably loved hearing that time frame because it gives her a lot more time to continue her on the job interview for the position (assuming she wants the full-time gig). She also was probably thrilled to hear that he doesn't plan to use a search firm.

Perhaps Kaler is giving her more control of the department through May to test her. If he likes how things are going and she is interested in being the permanent AD, then the job is hers. Kaler would still have a month to get someone in there if necessary.

We hired Norwood after a single 2 hour interview with a 4 person panel. I have to think if we are searching until July we will look at canidates a little closer this time.

From what I have heard...Norwood was already hired, in their minds, before the interview even happened. They thought they had a slam dunk.

Are you saying a Tubby like hire?

All for Kaler taking his time and getting the right person but 6+ months is a really long search period. Especially when you consider that he has also had the past few months to consider potential candidates. Just feels like a really long time to make a decision like this, most places seem to move a lot quicker but maybe that is just perception on my part.

Hey, he'll get to it when he gets to it. He's got Christmas shopping, Spring Break and other presidential-type things that need his attention.

I wonder about the reading and comprehension level on this board.

Kaler said by July 1 which doesn't mean on July 1.

Maybe June 1 would make folks feel much better. Or even May 15.

He said by July 1st.

That doesn't mean he won't name Goetz on January 1st, if she wants the job.

Has Mark Coyle from Boise State ever been mentioned?
Football is king. He graduated from Drake, was an associate at University of Minnesota. Also has worked at Kentucky. Seems to have proper credentials. I have no idea if there would be mutual interest.

That's still on Kaler. So why should anyone trust him this time around?

Seriously that's what it feels like. He's already had 4 months, yet needs another 7? If a new AD is hired around July 1st, the U will have spent almost a full year without a permanent AD. I guess our men's football, basketball, and hockey teams are in such great shape they can just run themselves.

Valid point however I don't think he would have tossed out a date like July 1 if he thought they were anywhere close to making a decision.

He just fired/hired his first football coaches as Syracuse AD.

I am going to take it a different way. Rather than selecting someone who is actively seeking the job, I am hoping Kaler is going to recruit someone who already is doing a great job somewhere else to make the move to the U of MN. This strategy needed the investigation to be over before the recruiting could even start.

At least that is my hope

I don't see a problem with the July 1st date. Everyone has been saying you can't hire one mid school year, so if you have to wait until mid May to really have a go at hiring someone thats only about 5-6 weeks.

Anyone know where I send my resume?

Historically, programs tend to go in the opposite direction when making a new hire - especially if the previous person left under a cloud. So, given that, I would guess the U will be looking for a "competent administrator" type - not some flashy glad-handing character like MegaTongue. I would also guess they will be looking for someone with experience as an administrator. that would tend to rule out the "outsider" candidates like Carter or Najarian.

For that matter, Kaler never specified a year, so we could be waiting awhile.

You are right. Shouldn't take the better part of a year to hire an AD. But this may mean Goetz is peripheral, or he would hire her now and be done with it.

Teague tried to give the impression he was a flashy glib fund raiser. In fact, he was not that personable, not good at listening to donors, and actually kind of an introvert trying to act like an extrovert.
That is why Louie and JK did all of the heavy lifting with donors.
The search firm sold the search committee a bill of goods about more than his personal character

Good question.

They are going to roll out the committee of four again - a chemistry prof and others who really know how to pick winners.

July 1st

I believe the July 1st date has more to do with school calendars than anything else. I don't think a quality A.D. is going to leave, say during the basketball season at his school. And a quality A.D. would be less interested in listening knowing an earlier target date, not to mention respect to other universities for poaching their guy during active seasons

I would think if they are going to hire Beth...they would. Rather than spend time and money with a charade process.

I'm guessing the process is done prior to July 1 but they come on board then.
