per Joe's STrib blog:

Incoming Gophers freshmen Donovahn Jones and Chris Streveler will see time at wide receiver as well as quarterback when preseason camp starts Aug. 2, Coach Jerry Kill said Wednesday.

Jones was recruited as a quarterback, but the Gophers have been buzzing about his athleticism since he got to campus. He was a standout basketball player at Dutchtown (Ga.) High School and jumped so high in a recent pickup game at the Bierman facility that he touched his head on the rim.

Streveler, from Marian Central Catholic in Illinois, also was recruited as a quarterback, but he has good speed and has increased his weight from 205 pounds to 218 since getting to campus as an early enrollee in January.

"[Jones] will go to camp as a quarterback, but he also wants to play, and he could help us at receiver; I think he will," Kill said during Big Ten Media Days. "Streveler’s kind of in the same position. He’ll go to camp as a quarterback. We want both of those guys to learn both positions, if they can."

Go Gophers!!

if either of the aforementioned see actual gametime as qb something has gone awry.

They both should see time at WR - QB may be locked up for the next 4 years.

3 years, sure, but 4 years?

If one or both were to redshirt, they'd have 2 years of eligibility left when Nelson graduates. I think they'd be best served focusing on the position they plan to play when that happens. I can't imagine all the time at WR helped Gray play QB when Weber graduated, for instance.

yes, it is obvious. I mentioned it cuz the title of the thread will mislead some to think this is re: actual game time. neither of those 2 kids will be a QB in an actual game for the U this year.

I was thinking Leidner may make it the 4 years since he redshirted. Nelson and Leidner both look like they will be solid QB's. Would both of these FR want to sit behind them and possibly waste their college careers not playing?

All we can do is take Kill at his word when he says he wants the best athletes on the field - not standing on the sidelines. If these players can help the team win games, they'll be playing somewhere.

If an athlete is good enough - and smart enough - he can learn two positions. The biggest problem Gray had was not switching positions - it was the merry-go-round of coordinators and systems. Presuming no changes in the staff, the incoming freshmen will be playing 4 years in the same system with the same coaches - putting them in a much better situation.

If Jones is as dynamic an athlete as advertised, I think he'll get snaps at QB - maybe not this year, but at some point in his career.

The QB position isn't even locked up for the opener against UNLV. Nothing is guaranteed in this business from year to year, or even game to game. Everything is earned, nothing is given. Absolutely maddening last year to hear so many people say that Gray should start at QB because he "deserves" it, because he's a Senior. BS. Best man plays. Anything else is a disservice to the rest of the team on the field doing their best to win.

Nelson and Leidner will both see a fair amount of snaps this year. I'd be surprised if Leidner doesn't take 100 snaps this year or more. I like Nelson, don't know much about Leidner, have no clue who will be starting by the midway point of the season. I saw some things last year that I really liked in Nelson but he's guaranteed nothing. I hope he excels and starts for the next 3 years, that would be phenomenal. But if he doesn't, it means somebody else is more deserving and is just plain better.

Disagree - Nelson will be the opening night QB and Leidner his back up barring injury in fall practice. Nelson has experience now.
