The names come tumbling back, like boulders careening down a mountain, carrying the power to crush the spirits of long-suffering Gophers fans.

Ron Dayne, whose 297 yards brought boos in Camp Randall when the Badgers finished off Minnesota by taking a knee rather than giving him the ball. Montee Ball. Melvin Gordon. James White. Anthony Davis, whose 301 yards in a 2002 debacle still sting. An anonymous freshman named Zach Brown, who romped around the Metrodome for 250 yards in 2007, then never managed even another 100-yard day in his career.

Now comes Jonathan Taylor, the latest and some might say greatest in Wisconsin’s long line of power running backs. Kirk Ferentz thinks so, anyway.

“As good a running back as we’ve seen during our time here,” Ferentz, now in his 21st season as Iowa’s head coach, told reporters, “and we’ve played against some pretty good players.”

Go Gophers!!

I’m not ever going to be the person to give a BADger credit, but Melvin Gordon got hosed not winning the Heisman. He was far better than Taylor.

They're system backs, like old QBs from the University of Houston. One in 5 is OK at the next level, but for the most part, they flop. Taylor might be a good pro, but it's largely dependent on where he's drafted.

No doubt a good solid player. The best? Not so sure but does rank up there.

I know this is a hate week and all that but have to give him props - he’s incredibly durable, patient, explosive, with speed. He’s scary if he can get loose.

He's an amazing college back.

I'm really interested to see how his NFL career goes.

Ron Dayne played 7 years in the NFL. He ended up with 3,722 yards and 3.8 yds per carry.

Taylor has been very good getting yards after contact and has added pass catching to his résumé. His downside is ball security and has taken a steady pounding averaging 23 carries per game for his college career. I can see him going anywhere from 1st round to 3rd round.

He is really good, it will be interesting to see how he does playing on Sundays. The addition of pass catching to his game really helps him and their current offense. I hope we can contain him, hit him in the backfield and slow him down any way possible or this may not be a fun game to watch. Will have to tackle better than they did against Iowa.

Add to that Ohio State QBs.

Ron Dayne was really, really good.

Question: With the limited life span of a running back, why didn't Taylor do pro after last year?
