per Joe:
The Gophers offensive line definitely will have a different look next season after two potential returning starters — Ben Lauer and Brian Bobek — both retired Saturday.
Lauer, who had started 14 career games at tackle, is a fourth-year junior who still had a year of eligibility remaining. Lauer will graduate with a mechanical engineering degree next spring and plans to put it to use immediately.
The 6-7, 310-pound Wayzata grad has dealt with ankle injuries during his career and suffered a concussion this season. He made the last start of his career Oct. 31 against Michigan.
Coach Tracy Claeys said he wasn’t surprised by Lauer’s decision to go out with this year’s senior class.
“We give all those kids that choice,” he said. “Once they’ve earned their degree and get into that, we sit and talk and let the kids do what they want and make a decision on that.”
Bobek is a senior, but he had applied for a medical redshirt for the 2013 season, which he missed because of a heart infection. That would have put him in position to return next season.
Isaac Hayes was the other scholarship junior, besides Lauer, to call it a career Saturday. Like Lauer, Hayes will graduate with his mechanical engineering degree next spring. The St. Thomas Academy grad played sparingly for the Gophers and has been out because of an injury of late.
