STrib: Gophers injury report lists Ed Olson and Berkley Edwards as out for the NMSU

I'm really anxious to see Edwards. Hope it happens soon.

No Ben Perry on the 2-deeps? Didn't he start a bunch of games in 2011?

I hope that means that A Keith and Hank Ekpe are THAT good

Nice to see Pirsig healthy....just wish he wasn't 2nd team OL as a RFr. These are the things we're still overcoming. We still need more depth.

Jones is 1st at the X-receiver spot. Hopefully he is able to show off his athleticism.

I went right to Gophersports.com, Donovahn Jones and Drew Wolitarsky, are listed #1 and 2 in the X reciever spot.
Mean Joe beat me to it but Woliitarsky being #2 is also important.

Eddie Olson is a marshmallow I swear it..... the kid is constantly hurt with something. It's really too bad for him, but seriously.

I would think a guy that has played through pain, had surgery, rehabbed for months and is working his tail off to get back on the field is worthy of more than your petty "marshmallow" comment.

And technically the kid has been hurt by one thing constantly. His ankle has been an issue since his FR year. He had surgery to try and fix it last year but it doesn't seem to be working.

May just be one of those things that can't be fixed.

Jonah and Ra'Shede coming first off the bus is worth something.

+1 Give the kid a friggin' break!

+1, some things can not be fixed once the tissue is damaged badly enough. The fact folks saw him limping in the UNLV game is not a great sign for getting him back this season. Good luck to him. He has gone through a lot to play.

I don't see any problem at all with a big-time OL recruit like Jonah being on the 2nd team as a RFr. I'd be more concerned if he was 3rd or 4th team and one of the McAvoy's was ahead of him.

+1. I'm much more concerned about Lauer being #2 on the left side.

Eddie O has had some tough luck and I hope he can recover in time for B1G play. It is his senior year and last chance to play college football and I feel for the kid, those of you hating on him need to see the bigger picture.

Totally unrelated side notes:

This OL depth chart makes me wonder why we aren't going after more OL recruits for this class and shows how important keeping Ragnow home is.

It's nice to see both potential future bookend tackles are MN kids.

Agreed. This guy has as much heart as two guys. I had a doctor friend tell me that ankle injuries can be the worst. So many bones and ligaments. It's also hard to recover because of that fact, and the fact it's hard to "stay off it"..

As someone said, if you saw him limping around the UNLV game you kind of come to the conclusion this thing is chronic. Can't see why posters are busting his chops, but then again, this is the Gopher Hole.

+1. I'm much more concerned about Lauer being #2 on the left side.

I know he's young but haven't we been hearing good things in the past about Lauer from Kill and Limegrover? I thought they were pretty high on him. I remember one quote recently, in regards to the LT battle, that Eddie, Marek, and Lauer ALL think they should be starting. Sure, it's just a quote, but it leads me to believe (optimistically) that there may not be that much of a dropoff from Marek to Lauer.

That being said, I hope Lauer can get some PT this year, especially in the NC part of the schedule. That's probably part of the reasoning behind Eddie sitting this week; give him time to get more healthy, and hopefully Lauer gets his 2nd team reps. Double bonus.

+1. Kill has mentioned ever since Lauer signed that he believes he got a steal and that he's lucky other big schools didn't find out about him. I'd put Lauer on par with Pirsig as a recruit and now a player. And it certainly says something that Lauer is the backup LT and not Pirsig, LT is the more important position. Pirsig's knee injury may have something to do with it though, he's probably a little behind.

Usually LT is the more important position, in the NFL it almost always is. But in our running offense, maybe not so much.

I don't disagree with what you're saying. My comment was only in reference to somebody being concerned about Pirsig being in the two-deeps. I was just using Lauer as a comparison since he was a much lighter-recruited prospect.

Kirkwood did not make the trip to NMSU. Neither did Eric Carer, though it would seem his is depth chart related, not injury or disciplinary related.

I think Eddie just isn't going to heal up. Poor guy and as far as Pirsig, I don't know if he has a mean streak in him. Can anyone address that?

Indeed, give Olson a break. These guy's bodies take an incredible beating and some players are going have especially bad luck with injuries. As for Pirsig's mean streak I think that one can be developed or at least a competitive streak. I know a guy who teaches in Blue Earth and he described Jonah as a "gentle giant." I think that he can probably be an effective finesse blocker without being a totally mean basta_d. Go Gophers!

I overheard Eric Carter talking at a stoplight today saying that he is redshirting.

I heard similar things from people in sconnie about Joe Thomas. Guys that big don't need a mean streak necessarily, it helps, and can be another tool in their bag, but lots of giants like that can just control and block the guy across from them regardless of anything. He needs technique and strength though.

I heard the same thing from a guy who heard it from a guy who overheard Eric Carter at a stoplight also.

My friend who overheard that told me that Carter was talking TO a stoplight, not at a stoplight.

Don't believe me if you don't want to. Just telling you what I heard him tell some chick.
