Jeff Jones has had a quiet training camp for the Gophers after looking this spring as if he could be a force, even at a new position.

Jones, a highly touted running back recruit who converted to wide receiver, missed practice Wednesday because of an unspecified injury.

He was able to watch in an orange, nonparticipation jersey, and there were no indications from the team that the injury could keep him from the Sept. 3 season opener against Texas Christian.

Still, it marks a setback for Jones in what already had been a different camp for him, compared with spring practice.

In Saturday’s scrimmage, Jones was targeted a few times but did not have a catch or a rushing attempt. This was a sharp contrast to the team’s late-spring scrimmages, when Jones emerged as a go-to target and caught nearly everything thrown his way.

Of the two schools of thought...

1) Gotta get the top talent on the field, this guy can catch the ball, Percy Harvin reborn!
2) curious how the top RB recruit isn't playing RB, Why isn't he playing RB when a true freshman is expected to get carries at that position, is he an early bust?

This latest news lends a little more toward #2. He hasn't played a game yet and this may all be pre season chatter that we will all share a laugh over, some day.
 

Not worried at all. You can pretty much classify Jones as an early-enrollee true freshman. Yes he was on campus last fall, but he couldn't do anything with the team. Spring ball was his first chance to practice, and at a brand new position. I know the 4 stars next to his name are going to raise expectations, but that just isn't fair. Patience.
 


Have no idea if a couple of the posters actually read the article but it certainly wasn't hinting at it's time to panic or "The season is lost".

umm, they were being sarcastic with the pics they posted. no one is panicking.

It probably doesn't help his development that he had a concussion. I'm still excited to see what he has to offer. Sounds like it's minor enough that he'll be available for TCU regardless.
 

We shall soon see how he handles the pressures of being a 4* and being in the spotlight.

Love JJ but doubt he will ever play running back for the U. He is quick, shifty, smooth and has very good hands BUT he does not, at least at this point have great power. If you have noticed this coaching staff likes guys that can move the pile like Cobb, Nugget, Smith and Brooks the freshman. When those guys run into the line there is a whole lot of smacking going on. With JJ, not so much.

It is possible that JJ can lift weights and get to be as powerful as Nugget but, in my opinion, unlikely. Why bother? We have guys that can do that. What this team needs are guys that can catch the ball in the open field and make people miss. JJ is perfect for this.

I think as the year goes on JJ will get more and more playing time and by the time he graduates he will be a star - just not at running back.
 

A couple of years of strength & conditioning will do him a lot of good like it did to Cobb. Let's not forget he was totally a sea (out of football) last year, and he still has sea legs.
