Gophers football has begun its return to campus, targeting a return to voluntary workouts next week, with more teams soon to follow.

The athletics department on Friday announced its plan to gradually bring student-athletes back for voluntary team activities and the testing protocols the department has implemented to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

After football, which already began the testing regimen Friday, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, soccer and volleyball will all make their way back to campus. Other sports will follow in the next several weeks.

Once back to campus, the student-athletes will complete a symptom and exposure questionnaire in the days before taking a COVID-19 test and an antibody test to determine if the student-athlete has already recovered from the virus.

If a student-athlete has two negative COVID-19 tests, he or she will go through a process before gaining clearance for workouts. With a positive test, the student-athlete will enter a protocol involving self-isolation. But those student-athletes will still have access to resources and daily communication with athletic medicine staff. They can “return to athletic competition after meeting certain criteria,” per an athletics department release.

Go Gophers!!

It seems like they have a well thought out plan. The hardest part will be to convince the athletes to practice social distancing away from the facility. I don’t see much evidence of it in some their social media accounts. I was 20 years old once, so I understand, but I didn’t have a future NFL career to protect. It’s time to start taking it seriously.

Players will probably be quarantined, which would mostly solve the social distancing problem I mentioned above.

Getting COVID would jeopardize their NFL career? I don’t follow.

Don’t read too much into it. I’m talking about potential draft status. Just like being injured, those with covid won’t be able to show NFL scouts what they can do until they are cleared. That could theoretically take anywhere from two weeks to two months. Those with symptoms may take a while to regain their full strength and endurance, and play like shit when they return (if they return).

Some people have claimed that it can cause permanent damage to lungs, in severe cases, but I won’t go there, because you’ll probably demand proof. :)

A limited number of University of Wisconsin student-athletes will be allowed, under a phased approach, to return to campus for voluntary athletics activities beginning on June 8, approximately three months after the COVID-19 pandemic halted college athletics activities across the country.
UW Athletics' plan includes the voluntary return of the Badger football and volleyball teams for initial health assessments and COVID-19 testing the week of June 8, followed by the start of strength and conditioning activities on June 15. Additional student-athletes will be brought back, as well, as the summer progresses.

The University of Minnesota athletic department announced today its plans for a gradual approach to bring student-athletes back to campus. Student-athletes who choose to return to campus are doing so voluntarily, and all scholarships will be honored if a student-athlete decides not to return to campus for the fall semester.

Members of the football team will be the first to return to campus and will be followed by student-athletes for men's basketball, women's basketball, soccer and volleyball. Additional students will officially return to campus in the next several weeks as well.
