per STrib Q&A with Coyle:

Q Is it fair to say you want to see how the football and men’s basketball seasons play out before you think too much about those things?

A Again, it’s spending time with those coaches. I literally met Coach Claeys at a Dairy Queen for the first time. I’ve enjoyed getting to know him and I’ve been very impressed what they’ve done academically. Last year, 6-7, Tracy will be the first one to tell you that’s now where we want to be. I can tell you I’m very competitive and I want to win. I believe we can win the right way — and what I mean by that is academically, socially and athletically. I’ve enjoyed spending time with Coach Pitino and getting to visit with him. Similar to my conversations with Don, it’s about what I can do to help them. What do we have to do to get this thing to where we all want to go? I promise you, whether we’re talking about Don or Richard or Tracy … or any coach, nobody wants to win more than them, and nobody wants to do it the right way more than them.

He' has political chops. It's pretty apparent we're never going to hear anything particularly newsworthy, straightforward, or opinionated out of him which is fine. One doesn't become a high level administrator without being a politician. One day Pitino will just be gone. Gestapo-like. What law is that again? The Hans Gruber Law?

Hans Gruber's Law: Gravity kills.

I wouldn't call Coyle's comments to date reeking of comparisons to a politician. To me, he seems smart, calculated or strategic and intelligent to date. Not many politicians give me that impression.
Regarding Pitino, like any coach anywhere, they are hired to be fired. But I disagree it is a foregone conclusion that Pitino is gone. Another incident before he wins 20 plus games this season will make life pretty precarious. If they get some breaks, stay eligible and healthy...confident he'll coach the team well and talk will turn to extending him... (I like happy endings)

Saying things without saying anything is a gift. If you think I'm criticizing him I'd disagree...Just amused. Par for the course administrator-speak. Nothing wrong with that.

What I disagree with about your characterization of Coyle...so far from hearing Coyle...is that he is par for the course. He seems much better than that to me. Norwood didn't say anything but what he did say characterized him as the stereotypical bad used car salesman by myself and many others. I'm also not a fan of Kaler's public offerings...so using those two as examples, Coyle is much preferable to me...not average or even par....better. And we'll see...time will tell where he really stands.

Fair enough. But i outright called Teague a slimy used car salesman from the get go. Coyle is not that. He doesn't rub the wrong way, but speaks in a very calculated way which I have always found fascinating. It really is an art, and something adminstrators need to be able to do. Please, do not take any of this too seriously...he's just a man not your mother.

Actually, I think he said exactly what he means and if he said anymore he would be coming to conclusions he should not have made yet.

Herb Tarlek in WKRP in Cincinnatti is an angel compared to Woody Teague.

per PiPress Q&A:

Q: Football coach Tracy Claeys has been optimistic about turning around a 6-7 team and possibly contending for a Big Ten West title. What’s been your takeaway from meeting him?
A: I really appreciate his humility. He comes across refreshing and he doesn’t shy away from the expectations. I’ve been very fortunate in being around Boise State football and having to be around Kentucky basketball and Syracuse basketball — some programs at a really high level. I really appreciate how Tracy talks about and expects us to compete at that high level. I really am pleased with the academic progress of that program. You see what they’ve done academically, which is awesome, and what they are doing athletically. I think there is a strong correlation between that. I look forward to watching our kids compete this fall.
