Per Kent:

Here are five things we learned from Tuesday’s victory in Madison:

The Gophers play defense

Minnesota ranks first in the Big Ten in opposition points per game (50.1), third in defensive field-goal percentage (34.8) and second in three-point defense (25.0).

After Tuesday’s game, Wisconsin coach Marisa Moseley talked about how much better and more physical the Gophers defense is in the second year under Plitzuweit. “They really turned up the heat with their physicality,” Moseley said.

One big reason could be 6-1 freshman guard Tori McKinney, who has been starting in place of the injured Mara Braun. McKinney has length and quickness and has assumed the job of picking up the ball at the top of the defense.

“They have a lot of similar players,” Moseley said. “They can switch on defense [rather than fight through picks]. Second year with that group? Definitely a difference.”

That has allowed the Gophers to win games even when the offense has been inconsistent. The Gophers don’t have a player in the top 30 in scoring in the Big Ten and are in the middle of the conference pack in points per game. Wisconsin didn’t hit a field goal in the first quarter and missed its first 14 shots while falling behind 27-4.

Better starts

After falling behind Nebraska 27-11 through the first quarter in Lincoln — in a game that was basically even after that — the Gophers were a combined 47-13 in the first quarter in victories over Penn State and Wisconsin.
“Coming back after our Christmas break, Dawny P was really harping on that,” said junior Amaya Battle, using the nickname for Plitzuweit she coined. “We can’t go into games, quarters, down. We practiced those scenarios, and I think it’s starting to show in games.”

Quick starts and tough defense have been key. The Gophers won on the road at Wisconsin despite shooting only 33% and scoring 36 points over the final three quarters.

Taking care of the ball

Last season, the Gophers averaged 13.5 turnovers per games. So far this year, they lead the Big Ten in fewest turnovers (9.3 per game), are first in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.83) and third in turnover margin (plus-8.33). This is something Plitzuweit has made a priority since the start of preseason practice.
The Gophers have three of the top five and four of the top seven players in the conference in assist-to-turnover ratio. Battle, who as a point guard handles the ball the most, has cut her turnovers per game from 3.8 last season to 1.6 this season. McKinney has 33 assists and only seven turnovers in her first season.

Balanced offense

The offense, while it can be up and down, is balanced. The Gophers are middle of the pack in the Big Ten in scoring overall. Their leading scorer among healthy players is backup center Annika Stewart (11.6, 36th in the Big Ten). But Plitzuweit’s rotation has three players averaging in double figures and seven averaging 7.7 points or more. Tuesday’s victory was a prime example of this. Battle scored 13, guard Grace Grocholski 12, center Sophie Hart 11, forward Mallory Heyer nine and both McKinney and Stewart seven.

The Gophers are resilient

They have continued to win despite losing Braun because of a foot injury after five games and losing backup forward Taylor Woodson to a torn ACL in Game 12.

McKinney has been impressive, scoring in double figures in all but two games since taking over as a starter. She had a career-high 25 points in the victory over Penn State, a career high in assists (six) Tuesday.

Go Gophers!!

Playing an all-cupcake non-conference schedule sure helps.
Penn State and Wisconsin had stronger Non-Con games... So must have used that to dominate the Gophers...... Right? I mean, as much as we harp on the non-con, it must be the end all be all and prepare teams in the big ten.... so Penn State and Wisconsin couldn't have lost to the Gophers since the Gophers had such a horrible Non-con...right!?

How many Big Ten wins do we need to amass before we give this a rest? Clearly we are decently prepared to play (especially defend!) in the Big Ten despite an easier non-conference schedule.

Also, did you miss the below article mentioning that the Gophers' NET ranking of 28 is the highest its ever been? The numerous 30+ point blowouts factored strongly into that! https://www.startribune.com/gophers...anking-dawn-plitzuweit-johnny-tauer/601200659

Her Hoop Stats has the Gophers rated 36th overall nationally, and another algorithm (Bart Torvik's) has them rated 23rd.

Coach P is doing great things for this team and people are starting to notice!

The article states 5 top reasons they're 14-1. It is absolutely fair and honest to state non-conference scheduling is a big reason and is easily a top 5 reason that was omitted.

If you cannot handle it, then go crawl into your safe space.

With that said, this team is better than last year, and they're playing well.

must have miss that article that was shared here about how scheduling works..

give it a break.. were in January and people have been whining about this since Oct..

maybe just enjoy the season and how much we have improved in a year under Dawn..
And we’re in the top 30 NET!

And we’re in the top 30 NET!
and yet some fans just want to complain and whine about the non conference.. nothing we can do about that now..

wish our fans would just enjoy the season and how much we have improved in a short time..

also SMU who we beat in NON conference just beat Stanford tonight

I will give you main reason the Gophers are 14-1. They hired a great coach. Good recruiter, communicator, understands offense/ defense schemes, motivates the players. As much as Kent Youngblood likes to hang out at Steak n' Shake with his ole pal Whalen, even he needs to admit that Coach P is a night and day difference and is making the Gopher WBB program a winner.

I will give you that their 2 Big Ten wins & SMU are quad 1 (Wisconsin is on the cusp), and the Houston, Vermont, Oregon St, Louisiana are quad 2.

That is 7 of the 14, and only 1 was a true road game. New Orleans is not Lafayette.

The Gophers played 2 quad 3, and 5 quad 4 games. Montana is at 190 has a chance to get up to quad 2 with a great Big Sky season, while Houston is at 176 and can fall into quad 3.

Play a quad 1 or 2 team on their home court during the non-conference part of the season.

All I was saying is that the schedule has to be one of the reasons they are 14-1, not 13-2 or 12-3.

I think it's fair to mention the softer NC schedule this season. You should also include that we have achieved the record playing most of the year without arguably the best player on our roster.

The NC schedule may very well keep us from making the Big Dance. However, there are so many other factors that should make you feel pretty darn good about this team.

It's apparent that we have a coach that is organized, believes in structural foundations on both sides of the ball, has improved our recruiting, focuses on player development and demands accountability from all of her players regardless of their status.

All I can hope for as a fan of our sports teams is that we have good leadership from our coaches, a talented roster and a specific, positive direction for the program. Coach P has more than surpassed my expectations thus far.

I'm confused by your post. At present, the Gophers have 14 wins, and all 14 wins are Quad 3 and Quad 4 wins under the NET system that the NCAA uses.

The Gophers two BIG wins and SMU are Quad 3 wins, not Quad 1, as you say. Houston, Vermont, Oregon St and Louisiana are all Quad 4 wins, not Quad 2 as you say.

Montana is not some how going to turn into a Quad 2 win with a great Big Sky season. Montana's current NET is 190. Montana would have to raise its NET to 55 for it to be a Quad 2 home win for Minnesota.

Agree with everything in your post except "The NC schedule may very well keep us from making the Big Dance." Barring further injuries, I believe the Gophers will rack up home conference wins and make the Big Dance, perhaps with a schedule-influenced lower seed, but still in the Dance.

Ski U Mah Gopher might've just forgotten that different ranges are used for women's basketball compared to men's.

I thought about that possibility, but don't think so. Hence my confusion. For example, Penn State is 83 in the NET, which is still Quad 3 for the men (Home 76-160), not Quad 1, as Ski U Mah indicated, though it's getting close to Quad 2 for the men (Home 31-75), while it's closer to the bottom of Quad 3 for the women (Home 56-90).

Coach P and her staff are about more than just the basketball. They recruit the entire person, not just the basketball talent. Then, the coaching and development is on and off the court. She creates an environment that makes strong, confident young women out of her student/athletes.
