Judging from back-of-the-room comments Wednesday, she’s interviewing well — even though she remains coy about her status as a candidate. Goetz still isn’t saying publicly that she will pursue the job.

“I haven’t made any public decision at this time,” she told me after Wednesday’s Claeys-and-Goetz show. “I’ve loved my time at the University of Minnesota, and hope to continue on in whatever capacity I can.”

Claeys — a fellow who knows what it’s like to be a fill-in leader — seemed to endorse her AD candidacy. “Beth has been very good to me and very good to us since we’ve been here,” he said. “Hopefully, she’ll get that opportunity, but I’m sure it will go through the same process as they did with me.”

More significant may have been the enthusiasm of a fellow who knows what gender fairness in collegiate athletics administration requires — Joel Maturi.

“She’s been remarkable!” Maturi exclaimed. “She’s confident, poised, articulate, able. We’re lucky to have her.”

Go Gophers!!

An Editorial Commentary on who the next U of M AD should be by feminist stalwart Lori Sturdevant that references fellow feminist whacko Phylis Kahn and then freaking Joel Maturi..........you can't make this sh!t up. Comic gold, I tells ya.....comic gold! Lol!

Guess Bleed is pretty anti-Goetz. Used a quote from Maturi in there supporting her! :D

Goetz may or may not get the job, and may be a fine candidate, but some of the statements in this article are naive, misguided and laughably ignorant about the college athletics landscape.

Total shock that this would be published in the Star Trib. Hahaha

Goetz seems a top notch person, but would be on a challenging learning curve. Also, fund-raising is so much a part of the job that longtime ties, especially with former players, business big shots, etc., other connections, would weigh heavily.

I don't disagree wih you, but I think to what degree she chose to to prioritize the football and basketball programs as a full fledged AD would go a long way in establishing connections with other bigwigs or not. Tough to say at this point because I've never seen her in an environment where she had to be persuasive and sell buying into U athletics. I don't think she's hurt her chances in any way though, and last time we took in someone with supposedly big time connections we got a tongue in the butt.

Ha, I thought the same. She could have condensed the article down to: "She's a Woman so she should get the job, damn it"

I love this... When a man recommends another man, it's because of his credentials. But when a woman recommends another woman, it's because of her gender... Glad the reps from the "good ol' boy" club are speaking up. Lol

Goetz is auditioning for the job right now and I would hope she makes enough of an impression that she gets the job. But having Phylis Kahn weigh in on this is about as counter-productive for me as it gets. And this is from a life-long Democrat who remembers when Phylis wanted to let 14 year olds vote.

When a man recommends a man because he is a man, OR because a woman recommends a woman because she is a woman???

:banghead:

Wow you must really hate women. You've displayed a lot of anger here.

In the words of Prime Minister Trudeau: "It's 2015, bro".

“The only way this will work is with a woman in charge,” state Rep. Phyllis Kahn, the sponsor of landmark legislation requiring gender equity in public school sports, said at the time. “I don’t think there’s any question but that men will dominate a merged department unless there’s a woman at the top.”

There are only 7 female athletic directors at the 120 bowl subdivision schools (source: http://onlyagame.wbur.org/2015/04/25/female-athletic-directors-college-titleix), so it's got to be "working" at a lot of other schools. I am sure very few of those 120 have been less successful in Football and Men's Basketball than the "U" over the last 15 years.

The "U" is at a critical place where it needs to get this hire right. There's facilities being built, ticket prices being raised, and revenue coaches who likely will need to be evaluated in the near future. Goetz is a very tough sell for me and it has nothing to do with her gender and everything to do with her resume.

Goetz or bust. How good was the resume of our former new norwood? Beth is here and the investigations are still in progress. Beth will be offered and will accept the AD Position here at Minnesota.

Can't we have Goetz and bust? Add augmentation into the deal?

Men: Football stinks this year. MBB will likely stink this year. Wrestling is terrible. Baseball is terrible. Hockey is terrible.

Women: VB #1, Soccer is in round 2 of tourney, Hockey is dominant. Softball has been amazing, the swimmers have won 3 or 4 titles in a row.

Can we find an AD to fix that?

Yeah, obviously women's programs can't succeed with a man at the top. Wow.

And certainly, having football and basketball make more money would be terrible for the women's sports. I mean to have more money in the athletics budget couldn't help them at all...

A woman as an AD is a wonderful idea; she could get away with doing some that has been needed for along time.......fix title 9.

It's antiquated and unfair. If women want women's sports they should support them. Hell they make up half the population.

I still can't figure out why our National Champion dance team can't be sanctioned as a legitimate sport.
Competition is legitimate. Costs for equipment would be a lot less than maintaining a rowing team.
More than mom and dad would show up and pay admission. Plus it would be a great equalizer for the counts in football.

Great point. I would just like some real national conversation on it. Folks are scared to talk about if it still has merit.

It's beyond insulting to think that a woman can't see that men's football, hockey, and basketball are most important money-making parts of the athletic department. I have no idea if Goetz is the right choice, but to think that any woman will automatically over-emphasize female sports to sabotage her own performance is asinine.

Agreed; revenue generating sports are the life blood for non revenue generating sports. Any business minded PERSON will see that.

Other than lack of opportunity, there is no reason to believe a woman can't be as successful or more than a man.....as long as she is able fix her husbands dinner before he gets home from work.[emoji41]

Your forgetting we already had an AD who did that and was allowed to stay as long as he wanted and was given another job afterward. Admittedly, he is the primary reason the non-revenues are in as good of shape as they are. That said, I cannot imagine that happening again. I believe the Board of Regents (with a couple exceptions), Eric Kaler, etc., realize where the bread is buttered.
