per the Star Tribune Editorial Board:

Kaler, who hired Teague, is now on his third athletic director in less than six years. There has been too much transition and turmoil in sports programs that are too seldom in the news for their achievements.

Sports should be an asset to the university, an add-on that builds character, community and, occasionally, the glory that exceptional performance on the field can bring. It’s also critical to recognize that the U is more than that. It’s one of the top 25 research universities in the country, with some of the nation’s best programs in chemical engineering, pharmacy, law, primary medical care and business.

Right now the university is deep into a project to create a $166 million athletes village. Before that facility opens in 2018, it would be good to ensure that the staff and athletes who will benefit are committed to high integrity and the combination of athletic and academic achievement that should mark a student-athlete at the state’s top university.

Go Gophers!!

Wasn't the grade point average the highest of any public institution in the nation? Athletic achievement doesn't happen without administrator support. Which isn't happening with the present staff.

Nice to see them highlight some of U's positive programs. Would also be nice to comment that we could have an athletic program that competes and wins at the highest level. This idea that we can only be average in sports to me is incorrect but would take a dramatic improvement in the administration to accomplish this feat.

Start by getting rid of Kaler and Coyle. They're both back handed liars. What a total mismanaged **** up.

I don't trust either one.

100% correct. I think you will get your wish with Kaler. Coyle might survive. Coyle is scum, but Kaler is a snake and people are finally noticing. Arne Carlson was right about Kaler awhile ago.

Kaler needs to go. Email Dean Johnson. Let your voice be heard.

Tracy Claeys was the one who lied about not agreeing with the suspensions initially. He knew and agreed with the initial directive.

President Kaler is smarter than just about anybody on this board and his commitment to excellence is unsurpassed. He is recognized nationally and globally for his work. The calls for his resignation are the most immature comments imaginable. And, for what? Football? The damage the football players have done to the University could amount to millions of dollars in damage for the personal goal of having sex, without regard to its public or personal consequences, not even to reiterate the consequences to the woman.

The University is a top 25 research institution. It has a research and development budget in the top 8 in the nation, an impressive increase under the leadership of Dr. Kaler. Tuition has had the lowest increases since the early 1950s. The number of National Merit Scholars has increased 150% since Kaler has taken over. We are currently ranked 4th in research universities for patents issued. The U is also considered the 3rd best research university to work for. And, Kaler has successfully reduced administrative costs by nearly $95 million dollars and transferred those funds to the academic departments and research, which is what many members commenting wanted to happen. This means there is under Kaler less administration and bureaucratic nonsense.

As for the athletic department, we had the women's volleyball team in the final 4. Women's hockey is ranked 2nd. Men's hockey is 9th. Men's wrestling is 9th (post coach transition). Men's basketball is winning in the Big 10. The program is not dysfunctional. The AD, it seems has not distressed the department where performance is diminishing. In fact the opposite seems to be the case. Performance overall is improving, including in football.

Under Kaler, the U is greatly succeeding. Without him, who will replace his prestige, capacity, management and leadership? If anything, Kaler should have his contract extended. I see nothing that disqualifies him from continuing in his present position.

No. He handled the situation atrociously, regardless of what side of the debate you're on.

I am shocked that anyone, even those supporting the suspensions and wanting Claeys fired, would come out of this thinking Kaler did well in this situation. He lied (proven by Coyle). He has looked disingenuous. He opened up the school to a ton of liability. He didn't have to do all of these things. They could have went with the exact same course of action, but he flapped his lips too much.

He was awful in this situation, regardless of where you stand on the whole debacle.

Much of what you say had nothing to do with Kaler. The legislature forced the university to cut bloat and the legislature is who controlled tuition, not Kaler. Zero credit to Kaler.

Kaler disgraced the university with the continued Markingson cover-up and your guy Arne Carlson wanted him out more than a year ago.

Kaler is a disgrace, a poor administrator, and nothing more than a hack trying to cover his rear by lying and throwing anyone under the bus that is necessary to retain his power and position. He should be removed immediately.

Don't let facts get in the way of a good narrative.

Thank you Prey K. Now we know who you are. Or at least you are one of his Lemmings.

All the above most likely true, but it has nothing to do with how he handled, or mishandled, the football situation.
