per Joe:

Longtime observers said it was the biggest crowd to watch a Gophers spring game since the Lou Holtz era.

The Gophers estimated that 10,100 turned out at TCF Bank Stadium on Saturday to watch a team trying to build off its first New Year’s Day bowl appearance since 1962.

But even with a genuine buzz in the warm spring air, coach Jerry Kill was careful not to reveal too much to a Big Ten Network audience. Surely, he knew his good friend Gary Patterson would be watching, studying up for Texas Christian’s visit for the Sept. 3 season opener.

So the Gophers disguised their personnel groupings and did a lot more huddling than they did during a spring that saw them install a new, no-huddle offense.

“We did things we wouldn’t do in the game,” Kill admitted. “We just tried to experiment a little bit.”

Go Gophers!!

I remember the time of Lou Holtz as a very exciting - albeit very brief - time in Gopher football history. While 10k attendance is not exactly a huge spring showing, that spring game attendance is returning to the times of Holtz is a very good thing, IMO.

10,100 is pretty good. Sure, there are a few schools that fill up the stadium, but 10,100 would have put us at #24 in Spring Game attendance for 2014. Last year we had 5,000.

We have come a ways from playing Spring Games at St Thomas in front of about 1,000 fans. That was my first Spring Game experience.

So true. I'm glad that's now wcco's problem.

Does anyone know what the attendance was "during the Lou Holtz era"? Which was one year I believe.

It should also be noted Nebraska charges $10 for adults (kids are free) while the MN spring game is free for everyone.

Normally the spring game interferes with cabin opening for me. This was the first spring game I have ever gone to. It would be nice to see more festival-style events tied to it.

Can't you just write "...trying to build off their New Year's Day bowl apearance"?

I think it sounds more positive adding since 1962. To me it shows how monumental it was last year. They accomplished something that hasn't been done 50+ years.

Crowd was so much larger than last year. If they claimed 5,000 last year it was 35,000 this year...lol. I believe the 10,100 number this year. Even had venders walking the aisles. Nice day, it was fun and you can't beat the cost - free.

Did anybody use the bathrooms? A guy near me was going to buy a couple of beers for himself and his friend. When he went to buy them he found out that they hadn't yet opened them up yet from being closed down for the winter. Maybe they expected you to use the cup to solve that problem. I expect there must have been some of them open. If none of them were were, I am sure GopherHolers would have would complained about it here. Anyway, I lost my thirst for a beer after that guy said they were closed. Was anybody here able to dispose their used beer at TCF on Saturday?

I brought 2 liters of water to my tailgate, used the bathrooms a couple of times on the level just above 144. Was he trying to use the ones on the ground level across from Goldy's?

We were on the visitor's side. I expect that may have been the problem. On the other hand, maybe he was cheap and didn't want to buy his friend a beer.
