With the change in rules for kickoffs this year I was afraid that Troy wouldn't get a chance to break the record. Going into today he needed 158yds and got 145, with the bowl game pending, it looks like he'll get an excellent chance to break the record. Congratulations:drink:

A dubious record indeed!

I remember when Stoudermire set the team record for return yards in a single game at the end of the '08 season during the 55-0 debacle against Iowa...

Yes congratulations for having the defense give up so many points that Stoudermire had so many chances to return kickoffs.

Pretty wild that he can break the record with a 13 yard return without ever housing one.

I agree that the record would be largely due to the poor defensive play but it would still be cool for him to have the all-time record. It is still pretty undeniable that T-Stoud has been a heckuva return man.

True, but he did just miss a couple of returns for TDs, including one today. Even though he never took one back to the house he has almost always been good for 25-30 yards and has broken plenty of big ones.

the one against illinois in horton's year won them the game.

Are you people fvcking kidding me? The B10 record that he broke was held by David Gilreath, and I'm very happy he knocked another badger down the list. Gilreath played from 2007-2010. Was that because Gilreath was playing for a crappy team?

He may become the single greatest kick returner in NCAA history, and people on a teams "fan" board are trying to minimize it.

+1 Even when a Gopher is about to break a national record, someone has to tell us that it's a bad thing. I hope Troy Stoudermire breaks the record, and I bet he will. I hope he can take one all the way back in our bowl game too, he took one back to Illinois' 2 yard line or something back in 2010.

The record is great and all, but really? Single greatest returner in NCAA history?

Can't be the greatest returner in history if you never house one for a TD. Great achievement for him to (likely) break the yardage record, but calling him the greatest in NCAA history is a little absurd.

More than a little.

Totally agree. He has been a very good/great kick returner for us and come close to breaking a ton of them but he is not the greatest return man ever. Still awesome for him and the program that he will end up setting the record baring a bunch of touchbacks in the bowl game, let's hope we end up against a team with an average kicker so he gets to return a few. Also would love to see him finally house one before his Gopher career ends. Amazing to think with all the great long returns he had he never took one all the way, just never seemed to be able to make that last guy miss.

Yep. He's not in the top 50 in yards per return and has as many return touchdowns as any of us. If he gets the record he'll be the greatest return man of all time in the same way that Timmy Chang was the greatest QB in NCAA history until Case Keenum took that title from him, and in the same way that Adam Weber is the 3rd best QB in Big Ten history.

He's been an excellent returner and the record would be a great accomplishment for him, but it's absurd to call him the greatest ever and anyone who does needs a little perspective.

His defense set him up for a lot of those returns. It seems like most of the big passing plays against us go to Stoudermire's man.

That's what I was going to say. A meaningless record. What should be considered is his average. Not only did he get more attempts than the previous two guys combined, but he played in more than 4 seasons. I mean, even two games in that year he broke his arm is still 2 extra games.

New kick-off rules hurt him as most kickers just kick it out of the end zone. Not a meaningless record, but he got to return a ton of kick-offs due to our subpar defenses. Has a great first step but doesn't have breakaway speed. I'll be curious to see his pro day workout times. He won't be at the combine, but my guess is pro scouts will want to take a look at him up close. Has a unique set of talents.

I love people who make claims like this without actually looking at the facts.

Let's take a look at the top 20 in career kick off return yardage. Of the top 20, Stoudermire had a better return average than 14 of them. Which means only five guys had a better average.

Former badger David Gilreath is ranked #7. His average was only 22.4 compared to Stoudermire's 25. Stoudermire's career high for returns in a season is 43. Gilreath's was 42. Stoudermire has just six more career returns than Gilreath, yet has nearly 500 more yards. Oh, and Wisconsin had a 37-15 record in Gilreath's four seasons. But obviously you can only put up these kind of numbers on a bad team.

Another player in the Top 20 is Chris Johnson who rushed for over 2,000 yards a few years ago in the NFL. He averaged 23.6 yards a return in his college career.

Yes he did have those two extra games. But many of the others on the list didn't have to deal with the new kick off rule. It would have been more beneficial for him (from a breaking the record standpoint) to not get hurt last year and play it all the way through. He probably would have gotten more than 26 returns if he played all of last year (26 is what he has combined this year and in the two games last year).

No it's not a record on the same level of what Montee Ball just achieved. But to say it's meaningless is just ignorant IMO.
