Where does the staff go for help now that the two main JUCO targets have committed elsewhere? If the defensive backfield doesn't get significantly better next year, it's hard to see how the defense takes a step forward.

Thats sucks, 0-2, I remember people were saying these two were almost locks but once I seen Baylor offered Shabazz I knew we were f'd. Lets hope Stoudemire gets that medical redshirt.

Another Idea

Suit up the cheerleaders?

If we were fully counting on two JUCOs to save our defense next year, we're already f'd.

They very well may have been, then ISU beat Okie State with Stokes there on his official and Shabazz went to Baylor just after they beat Oklahoma. Unfortunate timing.

Actually, 1-3, Baltazar is a JUCO DB, he projects more as a safety, but he is committed.

Yeah, I think we need to bring in at least 1 more JuCo DB.

The secondary is a huge question mark because there are some players who are experienced who we don't know where they stand. Bouie, Watkins and Carter are all question marks.

However, we do have some younger guys who are maturing. Manuel has all the tools, Vereen has had moments, Wells and Thompson will be returning, hopefully Stoudermire will be returning, Levine will be in the mix for SS, and we'll get to see what we have with Steve Montgomery.

It'll be interesting to see how our defensive backfield plays out.

If Stoudermire gets a 5th year what we will really need is a good lock down corner. I believe that Claeys is handcuffed in bringing the kind of pressure he wants because it leaves the CB's on an island. Currently we don't have the kind of corners to do that with the exception of Stoudermire.

I wouldn't get too worked up about losing out on Juco players. Sure some of them pan out but more often then not you find out they were at a Juco for a reason and they don't really give you what you were hoping to get from them. That is not to say we have not had some very good Juco players come in here, but from what I can remember it seems like more often then not they have been a disappointment.

That being said it would be nice to add some more experienced depth to the defensive backfield because we are certainly there right now and it will get even thinner with Royston, Lewis and possibly Stoudermire being gone.

Luckily, there are more than two DBs in the country.

In my mind, this is the unfortunate part of recruiting services. It isn't that recruiting services identify some good players. They do, and they are usually accurate. It is that folks get duped into believing that the list is comprehensive.

So, to answer your question, Kill will recruit someone else and the sun will come up tomorrow.

The sun will indeed come up, I'm just asking the question. We lose 3 of our 4 starters, plus JJ, who I've seen get more minutes this year than MC and others. And this was already a position of weakness. It seems that we are placing all of our hope in Stoudemire coming back, which isn't guaranteed.

I'm usually not a fan of bringing in JUCOs, but it looks like we need to at this position. I don't have confidence that the other players on the roster will be ready to explode onto this scene next season.

I think we all agree that we nned some help for the defensive backfield but I wouldn't sweat losing out on the two JC guys that it appears we have to this point. I am sure the staff has a recruiting board with quite a few names on it. They will just cross those two off and move onto the next ones.

I'm fine with bringing in a couple of juco's for depth, but I'm also looking forward to what happens with Michael Carter and the others when they actually have a second year with the same DC and defensive scheme. Maybe some will never pan out, but I'll bet a couple really flower. Coach Kill has said that his team is really starting to "get it" the last few weeks.

I'd love to see an engaged Carter that puts it together next year and a healthy Stoudemire lining up on the field.

Vereen will continue to get better. He's only 19, I think. He had over 60 tackles, a pick and several breakups. Wells has a lot of potential. Keep an eye on him. The team is very high on him.... and Carter, I feel has learned his lesson and will come back next year a more mature, focused player.
