Steven Lassan: Opener against Michigan should tell us a lot about both teams, but West Division is likely to come down to the Nov. 28 trip to Madison

The Golden Gophers are the biggest challenger to Wisconsin in the Big Ten West once again. Coach P.J. Fleck’s squad has the makings of a strong offense once again, as receiver Rashod Bateman opted back into the 2020 season (still needs a waiver to be cleared to play) to join quarterback Tanner Morgan and five returning starters in the trenches. The offense doesn’t have many preseason question marks, but a new co-coordinator setup — Matt Simon and Mike Sanford — is something to watch. The question marks for Minnesota rest with a defense that brings back only five starters and must replace All-American Antoine Winfield at safety. The opener against Michigan should tell us a lot about both teams, but the West Division is likely to come down to the Nov. 28 trip to Madison.

Minnesota is in great shape under P.J. Fleck to sustain the recent success but whether or not Rashod Bateman is deemed eligible will be critical to how much of a threat the Gophers will be in the Big Ten West in 2020. If he's cleared, Bateman completely transforms this offense, which will be needed even more given the turnover on the other side of the ball. Either way, Minnesota has a difficult path to a division title, opening against Michigan and having to go to both Madison and Lincoln late in the season. The Gophers will be a tough out, but I don't think they have enough to finish atop the standings this season.

Minnesota is hoping for a boost to their offense if Rashod Bateman can get a waiver to rejoin the team after he opted out in August to declare early for the 2021 NFL Draft. His loss really stung since he was expected to shoulder much of the load after record-setting running mate Tyler Johnson graduated. Chris Autman-Bell is a fine receiver but not on their level. Without him, the Gophers will need to shift even more of their offense onto running back Mohamed Ibrahim, who himself has to replace Rodney Smith. P.J. Fleck will have to row his team past tough opponents in Michigan and Iowa early in the season at home to have a shot at the division title, so we should quickly know if his team still has what it takes to contend.

Go Gophers!!

given all the questions on defense, game one will be interesting. especially early, the Gophers may have to win some shootouts - which makes Bateman returning even more important. Hopefully the younger players and new starters on defense improve during the season, so the Gophers could be a very different team by the end of the year.

If we win game 1 against Michigan we might as well claim the big ten west championship because the rosters may be completely ravaged by virus/injury by the time we play Wisconsin. /s.

Saying we won't beat Nebraska is already suspect, but saying we will beat Michigan and then lose to Nebraska?!?! How does that make any sense?
Yeah, it feels like none wanted to put up 7-1 for the Gophs and those two defaulted to Nebby as a loss since they picked a win over Iowa.

If we are 6-1 going into Nebraska the pressure of winning on the road will be immense. I think that game could be a make or break game for Frost, especially if he falters early. People may not have us losing because of talent, but because in college emotion makes a difference. Gophers could be coming in with a lot of pressure and Nebraska playing loose because the only thing they have to play for is the coach. If the season goes as I hope and suspect I would be worried about the Neb. game.

I'll consider worrying about Nebraska when Frost is no longer coach there.

what is the love for Nebby year in and year out by these sports commentators. What has nebby done to show and or prove otherwise, let alone improve their roster to say this year is different.

Since we're talking (were talking?) Michigan in this thread, I thought I'd point out that today marks the 6th anniversary of the beatdown our boys gave UM in Ann Arbor in 2014. Seems much longer ago given all that's happened since, but I still have fond memories of my first visit to the Big House and my Steel Reserve-fueled cheering. Tall boys were 2 for $3 at a gas station near the stadium. I paid the price later that night, but the cost-benefit still worked out in my favor, I believe.

This is especially weird considering Mark Ross has Nebraska winning in the Minnesota preview and Minnesota winning in the Nebraska preview. He is covering his bases.

At what point do these dips__ts have their pay docked, for fraudulently trying to prop up Nebraska???

2 out of 3 think they're going to at Iowa. Liars. How much you putting down on that one? Didn't think so.

Tom Osborne. Decades of winning even after 2 decades of mah.

Last year’s snowstorm was exactly what we needed to win. Dang snowstorm.

I just can't see a path to 4 wins for Nebraska. Two of their "easiest" games are on the road @ NW and PU. Illinois will not be a gimme this year. They play Iowa on the road later in the season. @OSU is a no way. Perhaps they pull a massive upset against MN, Wisc, or PSU, but the math on win total just doesn't check out for me.
