Steve Spurrier suggests college football players should be paid "about $300 per game"

per USA Today:

Acting as the conference representative, Spurrier brought up a proposal the 14 SEC coaches would like to set in motion. They want their college football and basketball players to receive expense money.

The suggested amount was "about $300 a game, and basketball would be a little less," he said. Over the course of the year, players would receive between $3,600 and $3,900, depending on how many games were played.

Go Gophers!!

My question is a simple one. Why would Spurrier's players be willing to take a cut in pay?

Bad idea. Once you start paying them anything, you will soon be paying them a lot more. It's best if they keep on receiving what they get now: a free education. That'll keep paying off for the rest of their lives anyway.

Not necessarily true...the student athletes (football players) were provided a modest monthly stipend 40 years ago. At some point since then - in its infinite wisdom - the NCAA thought it would be better if the athletes received zero money for personal expenses (i.e. a pair of Levi's, a few bucks to go on a date, etc.)

Actually in the cost of attendance scholarship, there is $2,000 allocated for "miscellaneous."

not sure your statement is accurate, but if so, then this is a recent change, as the NCAA paperwork I've signed (a while back) did NOT have any provision for misc. expenses...
certainly not $2k worth:confused:

unless luther darville is back on the scene, in which case, you'd better not speak too loudly... :p

Joel Maturi spoke to a class of mine once saying there are X athletic scholarships at the University for a total of Y dollars. If you divided it out, it was equal to the same cost of attendance written out in a financial aid package where the U has set dollar amounts allotted for things such as tuition, transportation, room and board, and miscellaneous. I remember $2,000 being set for miscellaneous, $194 for transportation ($97 for each semester which covered a U-Pass), etc.
