per JC Shurburtt:

South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier is never one to mince words. On Sunday during the Gamecocks media day, he defending playing East Carolina rather than a "power five" conference team.

"Playing East Carolina is maybe a little bit better than playing one of those bottom-tier Big Ten teams," Spurrier said.

Go Gophers!!

I mean, yeah. Also better than playing Kentucky or Mississippi State too.

How would he know? He's never played a "bottom-tier" Big Ten team. He's beat Michigan, Nebraska and Wisconsin and lost MSU and Iowa. Well, maybe he has played a couple of them.

And in other news:

Steve Spurrier: Getting a degree at South Carolina is a bit better than a bottom-tier community college degree.

Come on Steve, Directional Carolina at home. Furman at home. Directional Alabama at home. Did Hostess open a plant in South Carolina?

Kentucky last year had the #22 ranked recruiting class. That is only 2 spots behind almighty Michigan and ahead of Big Ten champ MSU and Penn State. Mississippi state had a better class than Nebraska and two spots worse than Wisconsin.

because we all know your recruiting class is a direct correlation to how good your team is

East Carolina beat down NC State and UNC last year. They only lost to Virginia Tech by 5. I'd be willing to bet East Carolina is a tougher match up than Purdue and Illinois as well.

According to ESPN: East Carolina is 0-4 vs. the B1G all-time. With all 4 losses coming against Illinois. Some of you self-appointed know-it-alls (you know who you are), including that loud mouthed dolt Steve Spurrier, need to do your homework before spouting off with any more of your lame anti-Big Ten b.s. smh.

When was the last time East Carolina played Illinois? I'm comparing last year's ECU team, not a team from decades ago. Some of these better teams in lower conferences can and do beat lower or even middle of the road teams in the bigger conferences. This is 2014 not 1984.

ECU typically is better than a bottom dwelling B1G team in recent history.

Spurrier is and always has been an ass. When he wins the SEC I'll listen to his brilliance, but he has consistently been out coached in that conference since arriving at sOcAR. When he was getting the pick of the Fla talent, he looked brilliant, now he is just another "ball coach".

One of my buddies player WR for the Pirates...ran a 4.3 40 (I'm guessing that was hand-timed).

New Viking Linval Joseph is also a ECU Pirate alum.

I'll disagree. He has done a marvelous job at SC. Three straight 11 win seasons. I would take that from "just another ball coach" anytime. 8 bowl games in 9 years, not too shabby IMO.

An O-lineman from Edina played for ECU last year. Don’t remember his name and don’t know if he is still on the roster.

Actually he plays for FCS Western Carolina. That makes a lot more sense.
