Steve Alford to UCLA. @ESPNAndyKatz with the news. At 48, but with a lot of experience he's an interesting hire.

andy katz reporting steve alford to ucla

not sure how well alford fits with ucla and what they need, but congrats to them. that said, our gophers will beat ucla with ben howland or steve alford coaching them.

He's had success almost anywhere he's been. He's got a ton of playing experience and a ton of coaching experience. Seems like a good guy. Too bad his career will die in UCLA. Nobody can ever reach their expectation.

Iowa looks so stupid, although Fran looks like a keeper. Alford won't excite the UCLA faithful.

I think it was a great below the radar hire. Sucks for New Mexico.

That doesn't seem like a good fit to me. I thought they wanted to run and gun.

I know Iowa didn't fall in love with Alford, but he left of his own volition. I don't see this as ending well, he's a good but not great coach. Expectations at UCLA are much higher than in Iowa City. If he couldn't handle the heat there how's he going to do in Woodenland ?

leaves Mn, usc, and txtech for any coach looking to move up?

Looks like Tubby has another potential employer.

No kidding. Interesting hire though. Didn't see them much at all but it was mentioned more than once during the tourney how New Mexico played the "slow down" style. How will that go over in L.A.?

At Sienna McCaffrey beat tOSU with their hi-end recruits in first round of tourney and has Iowa trending up. Alford and his main sleazy assistant Neal have flopped with good teams (Iowa 2006 and NM St 2013) in tourney and expectations will be off the charts at Pauley Pavilion.

Never mind. Wrong info. it was NMU contract from 10 days ago.

txtech needs tubby to complete the trifecta, after bobby and billy?

This suggests to me that Marshall is really not available. I would think that UCLA would have had a discussion with Marshall before hiring Alford.

It suggests to me that Katz was dead on... coaches are not moving to "greener" pastures. If UCLA hired Alford, then I think we would be lucky to have Flip.. as I doubt we are going to snag one of the coaches that spurned UCLA. The one disclaimer.. nobody really knows the impact of Teague and the strength of his relationships with Buzz, etc. I am still placing an outside chance at Teague hiring someone that UCLA couldn't get (Marshall, etc) based on the fact the coaches seem to like the guy. This said, it would seem that Minnesota would be lucky to get a long time NBA vet who just happens to be a big Gopher guy. Is the writing on the wall? In Flip we trust?

Looks like extensions aren't worth much (see NM extension). 1 million buyout did not slow UCLA down

People are reporting that the 1 million buyout doesn't begin until Monday, and so it's currently 150,000. Interesting.

So, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Alford basically a poor man's Ben Howland (poor man in that he is far less accomplished?) I suppose you take the less accomplished instead of the personality quirks. Will be interesting.

Wow, the Bruins drew only five crowds of 10,000 or more this season at recently renovated Pauley Pavilion.

There are other things to do in LA. Just sayin'...

You think its bad here wrt no shows at sporting events [compared to say Wisconsin or Iowa City]... LA is a whole nuther planet of opportunity when it comes to things to do OTHER than watch mediocre sports. If I lived in LA I wouldn't have gone to Bruins games either. Not until they produce a product that beats the beach or the 'hills'.

Spot on.

I would much rather have Howland than Alford. No comparison.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I believe that deal was agreed upon with New Mexico 10 days ago, not UCLA.

So that extension agreement still doesn't mean they are staying no matter what.

So Shaka's still in play? :)

Watch if Alford brings in Aaron Gordon. One year from now people may be singing the praises of this hire.

It seems like all stories on the UCLA coaching search always noted if the person was a west coast guy. Technically, Alford could be called a west coast guy, I think that is what they wanted.

UCLA is hurting as seen by this hire and attendance. Arizona is truly the gem of the Pac12 now.
