Why is everyone so convinced that Royce White is so great at basketball? He wasn't chosen to be a McDonald's All American. 24 people make that team. ESPN rated him as the 35th player in the 09 class. Here's what the people around him are doing in their respective first years in college.

42 rodney Williams 5.6 ppg 1.9 reb 0.5 ast Minnesota
41 isaiah armwood 2.2 ppg 1.7 reb 0.2 ast Villinova
40 thomas robinson 3.2 ppg 3.3 reb 0.4 ast Kansas
39 kyryl natyazhko 2.2 ppg 2 reb 0.1 ast Arizona
38 Erik Murphy 3.5 ppg 2.7 reb 0.3 ast Florida
37 Travis Wear 3.8 ppg 2.7 reb 0.2 ast North Carolina
36 David Wear 2.5 ppg 1.3 reb 0.4 ast North Carolina
35 Royce White
34 Christian Watford 12.4 ppg 5.9 reb 0.7 ast Indiana
33 jamal coombs mcdaniel 3.2 ppg 1.4 reb 0.6 ast Uconn
32 leslie mcdonald 3.4 ppg 1.6 reb 0.8 ast North Carolina
31 jamil Wilson 5.1 ppg 3.6 reb 1.2 ast Oregon
30 noel Johnson 5.2 ppg 2.1 reb 1 ast Clemson
28 Elijah Johnson 3.1 ppg 1.3 reb 1.7 ast Kansas
27 dexter Strickland 6.1 ppg 1.4 reb 2.3 ast North Carolina
26 milton Jennings 3.5 ppg 2.6 reb 0.5 ast Clemson
25 peyton siva 4.7 ppg 0.8 reb 1.6 ast Louisvillie

Christian Watford statistically is helping his team the most out of any player on this list and we all know how great Indiana is. Why does everyone assume that if Royce was on our team we would have been advancing in the dance no problem? Also some people think he'll enter the NBA draft and be picked up late first round...There were 34 prospects espn rated better then him (in the 09 class alone) and NBA scouts have actually gotten to see them play. Last time I checked there are only 30 teams in the NBA...how could he possibly go in the 1st round?

Royce White was physically ready to play in the Big 10. He was also much closer to being a finished product than Rodney. Those ratings take potential into account and while Rodney may someday live up that ranking, at this point Royce is much better than 7 spots above Rodney.

Not to mention, the Gophers really needed a physical PF type.

Nothing wrong with believing in potential until you start evaluating things based solely on potential and selective perception. It usually comes back as an accusation of underachievement and vigorous in-fighting. We were a potential contender in the Big Ten with Nolen, Mbakwe, and White. But, the similar can be said of three to five teams that are "potentially" as talented as us.

Considering the closeness of many of our losses (sans Purdue and OSU), is it really hard to think that a top 30 player could possibly be just enough to grab a few more victories than have been achieved? Let alone the distractions caused by him not being on the floor.

we would not have lost to the hoosiers, portland state, A&M, and MSU at home.

I have to laugh about a thread that starts with "Stats, Royce White"

Royce's career stats that we know of:

rebounds 1 - came back after quitting once
points 0
assists ? - did he help on the laptop caper?
steals 1 - MOA
fouls numerous

If I may add:

Internet and media appearances per minutes played....hard to compute that.

good post!

True, Royce White wasn't chosen for the McDonald's All-American game, but John Wall wasn't either (for different circumstances). White was chosen for the Jordan Brand Classic at the Garden though which some would say is more impressive because MJ's name is attached to it.

Who knows what would've happened had he suited up for the Gophs, but he played a position where we had a big void and in my opinon would've put good numbers from the start. Physically, he was ready to play Big 10 (D1) basketball and the same can't be said about some of the other guys listed in the original post.

Unfortunately, I guess we'll never find out what kind of numbers he would've put up.

Reusse's line yesterday afternoon.

6 months
5 misdmeanors
2 retirements

I was just trying to state there is no way he gets drafted in the first round this year...maybe someone will give him a shot with a 2nd round pick but most likely he'll go oversees first or he'll have to go to college for a year to proove himself.

1) He was definitely basketball ready to play in the BT
2) We don't have a true PF, he would be it
3) We suck at rebounding, lack toughness, lack a player with presence in the paint. Hard to argue he wouldn't be an upgrade from the crap we already have.
4) We lost some really close games. Hard to believe he wouldn't have been the difference in a couple of points
5) I think there's a good chance he would've been All-American had he played on a team where they actually needed him to score more. He also did pretty well in the Jordan Classic or whatever.

Lot's of reasons why we'd be better with him IF he didn't do anything wrong off the bball court at all since coming to the U of M. I don't think him joining in the last week or two would've been the difference between us making the tournament or not, but I think if he never messed up and was playing the whole year, then there would've been a pretty damn good chance of us making the tournament. He would've helped the team, and maybe if he never got into trouble than the lack of distractions would've helped us as well.

Here's his stats from the Jordan all American game.

Royce White -- 10 pts, 3-6 fg, 1-1 3p, 3-4 ft, 1 reb, 1 ast, 2 stl -- Has a powerful body, but seemed more interested in showing a jumper. White was able to step out and knock down a trey, but is far from a pure shooter. His shot is hard and flat, as it almost appears he is muscling it up. He was slightly overmatched athletically inside. Used to overpowering his opponents and having his way, but won't be that simple at the next level or the pro's. Undersized post player at 6-7 who must make the transition to the wing, but currently does not possess perimeter skills.
