I was bored today and collected box score stats for all 35 of Kill's games at MN.
What else should I look at?

Kill's Record
  • 9-3 non-conference record
  • 8-14 B1G record
  • 17-18 overall. With a win over Wisconsin, he can improve to .500 overall as Head Coach of the Gophers.
  • 15-8 in his last 23 games (non-conference included).
  • Under Kill, when the Gophers have won the turnover battle and time of possession, they are 10-1. Only exception was Texas Tech in the bowl game last year.

Rushing Yards/Game: 153.1, 127.3, 176.0
Attempts: 39.1, 35.1, 44.8
Average: 3.9, 3.6, 3.9

Observations:

Year Two Slump? Killyjoy pointed out this was due mostly to injuries.
Although Kill went 2-6 in B1G play in each of the first two years, his offense seemed quite a bit worse the 2nd year in most categories. Second-year slump? Opponents? 3rd year has seen improvement almost across the board.

Penalties Per Game about the same YOY. We were doing great in non-conference, but the penalties crept back to a nominal 5.2 per game during B1G play this year. 45 yards per game down from 51 yards in year 1.

Against the Rush
  • Kill's Gophers are 8-11 when giving up 150+ yards rushing
  • They are 2-8 when giving up 200+ yards rushing (Iowa '11, Indiana '13)
  • They are 0-3 when giving up 300+ yards rushing
  • Of Jerry Kill's 35 games as Gophers coach, Wisconsin sits at #3 and #4 in terms of most yards given up on the ground (337 yards in '12, 283 in '11). #1 is Michigan (363 in '11), and Nebraska (346 in '11).
  • The Gophers are 7-8 under Kill when allowing a 100-yard rusher. That record worsens to 4-8 when you remove non-conference opponents (Western Mich, UNLV, UNLV). 7 of the 8 losses were in year 1 and 2. Only IOWA in year 3. We've allowed 100-yard rushers 4 times and won 3 of those match-ups were this year. (Nebraska 165, Penn State 150, Indiana 111 and Iowa 252 in '11).

Turnover Battle
  • The Gophers under Kill are an amazing 12-1 (all wins, not just B1G) when winning the turnover battle.
  • 2-12 when losing the turnover battle.
  • 3-5 when tying.

First & Third Quarter Leads
We all know about the halftime stats, but what about first and third quarter?
  • The Gophers under Kill are 7-13 when losing after the first quarter. Not all is lost down after 1.
  • The Gopohers are 7-3 when winning after the first quarter.
  • When winning after the 3rd quarter, the Gophers are 7-1 (Michigan State, '11)
  • When losing after the 3rd quarter, the Gophers are 1-13 (Iowa, '11)

On Fourth Down
  • Kill is an amazing 30 of 52 on 4th down (57.6%) in 35 games.
  • This year, they are 7 of 10 (70%). Wow.

Wow! Matt H could learn a thing or two from you. Great analysis and insight. I have only one addition to this and it is perspective on this statement from you "Although Kill went 2-6 in B1G play in each of the first two years, his offense seemed quite a bit worse the 2nd year in most categories. Second-year slump? Opponents? 3rd year has seen improvement almost across the board." It has everything to do with a very young and injured offensive line. Contrary to some peoples' thinking this is not an excuse. It is reality.
