Man, after the beat-down we just got from NW, it seems that the Gopher sports scene is either just horrific (Men's BB and Football) to just plain mediocre (Men's Hockey). This is the most depressed I can remember being in years, because it's always seemed even if some of the sports were struggling at least ONE team would give you hope. Just don't see that now.

change in fortunes

5 months ago BBall was full of hope and promise and Football in the toilet

Today it is reversed.

You mean the Minnesota sports scene period? There isn't one major Minnesota squad with good vibes around it right now. Even the Twins have some blah to them. Vikings, Wolves, Wild...blah, blah, blah. Gopher football, b-ball, hockey....blah. It's bad right now, there's gotta be something in the water in this town.

Hope springs eternal, but that's ALL it is, hope.. at this point.

If losing games caused me to lose my fandom, I would've left this ship long ago.

And as I said before, it's even worse for me, because I'm an Arsenal fan. My sports life sucks.

Monty-at least the Twins made the playoffs and have a good shot at that this year. But as for Gopher sports? Unless the Hockey team wins the WCHA and the NCAA's I'm not seeing anything good for The U in the near term.

When was the last time MBB, WBB, Men's Hockey, and Football all didn't make the NCAA Tournament or a Bowl game in the same academic year?

Will someone like Doogie or a journalist dig deep into the Gopher Athletic program? The focus needs to be on trying to find out on what the core issues are. It is easy to call out a coach like many on this board will do. Tubby has had a bad year with some bad luck to go along with it, however, why is it that Tubby can win everyplace else and not in Minnesota? Maybe there is something systematically wrong with the whole program and the environment he is trying to coach under? Why can't they keep kids in school? Look at the problems the football program is having keeping athletes eligible. Or how the Hockey team continues to spiral. Also, why did Devoe J choose to leave? Maybe he could not make the grades and cut it academically? Regarding recruits and players, maybe the standards and the implantation of our standards are not on par with other top notch programs? Also, since teams like Minnesota cannot simply reload 5 star recruits (unless you are OSU or Duke) has anyone looked at the possibility that maybe Tubby should have been allowed to handle the Royce White and Trever incidents last year vs Joel Maturi? Imagine if RW were on the team, the Gophers would have the scorer they disparately need. Has anyone ever even considered that maybe some of the issues are systematic within the program and the leadership?

Where are the journalists who will take a fair and balanced view on the state of Gopher Athletics to dig deep and find out the reasons why we are perpetual losers and cannot compete with our close neighbors to the South and East such as Wisconsin and OSU?

$$$. Big up front investment, donors, and realizing where your bread is buttered. We started to get there with TCF. That doesn't necessarily explain all the issues around players leaving, but it helps bridge the gap as to why we don't compete with the top.

I suspect that it is a culture of losing that Joel maturi perpetuates and has done little to change. SY19 if you think the system is fine, then you must be just fine with getting blown out by North Western, after all everyone is a winner in your world of mediocrity.

you win at the top sports (mbball, football, and for minnesota hockey) those get you noticed (meaning money from sponsors, donors, and espn might realize that minnesota actually has a division 1 program.) Ohio State had 13 games on national (espn, cbs) tv. that is alot of publicity. you give the big 3 sports all the support they need and let the second level sports suffer. then once things are rolling you have more money to reinvest into the second level sports. Hopefully the new contracts with radio lead to some more revenue.
