Star Tribune: Kill works for fixes on field, in classes

.

Kill said his statement about needing four more recruiting classes doesn't mean the program is doomed for that period.

"I'd certainly like to think we'll have progress along those four years," he said.

And if they don't? "I'll fire myself,'' he said. But it's clear he feels the future will be challenging.

Kill will not need to fire himself more like where is my raise.

The "player haters" aren't going to like this but it looks like the reason they're keeping tabs on the "63" is they need to get "Bs" out of them, not just passing grades.

Cue the first "if they weren't such $$%*% they'd be GETTING an A!" :blah::blah:

""There's probably part of the 63 that are getting B's, but I'm going to make damn sure they're getting B's. I've got no choice, because if we have much more of this we're going to be caught in that tornado and we're never going to come out of it, so we're going to take extra accountability. That's why we've got people going through the dorms. We have to."

The Gophersa are 1-5 and have been outscored 103-17 in their first two Big Ten games.

Kill said he wasn't blaming the players or former coaches, but rather the overall instability of almost everything associated with the program.

"These poor kids have never gotten close to anybody," he said. "They don't know who's going to come in next. They're probably waiting to see which three coaches are going to leave now. Who's going to leave in academics? Are two trainers going to leave? ... It's been a revolving door. We have to get stability. We can't let our good people get out of here."

How a few of our gopherholers like nasa translate what Kill is saying:

Kill said his statement about needing four more recruiting classes means the program is doomed for that period.

"I'd certainly like to think we'll have progress along those four years, but our players are pretty bad so probably not" he said.

And if they don't? "I'll just have to get new players because obviously the coaching staff does a great job and it's not our fault,'' he said.

I take from these comments that Kill is seriously concerned with APR, attrition of kids, and possibly losing schollies which would really hurt the rebuilding process. As he describes it "that tornado"

If a kid is getting B's legitimately, and isn't going to class everyday, why should it matter?
I skipped class all the time in college and ended up with a 3.75 gpa. I even had one elective class my last quarter my senior year, where I didn't buy the book, and skipped everyday between the midterm and final and had the highest grade in the class. (it was US History - 20th Century - not underwater basket weaving.)

If they are getting B's without going to class, maybe they could be getting A's if they went to class? Also having the players that do well in class going to class could be a good example for the players that are skipping class.

Are you proud of that or just bragging. Oh, and 20th Century US History is not diffy Q either.

I'm neither proud nor ashamed of it. Simply stating a fact. Attendance policies in college are a crock. If someone can do the work successfully by putting in less time, I see no reason why they shouldn't. They're adults - they can make their own decisions as to how to spend their time. If there are some smart kids on the team who are getting acceptable grades, it should not be their responsibility to raise the bar for the idiots or for the sake of the team GPA, or to "be an example."

Kill's comments imply that he has to make sure the kids getting good grades continue to do so because a rising tide lifts all boats. I just don't see that it's on the shoulders of the good students to make recruiting easier for Kill.

I'm sure someone will say "they have a responsiblity to go to every class because the school is paying their tuition." I was on a full ride as well. If I was getting rotten grades, my scholly would have been pulled.

If they are fellow players, it's in their interest also to help Kill recruit the best players he can.

Their responsibility is to get acceptable grades to maintain eligibility, and put in their time to be the best players they can be for the team. They aren't recruiters, nor are they responsible for their teammates or any other students at the U. I can't imagine the stress of being a student and playing a D1 sport, much less expecting these guys to worry about the overall academic progress of the team and how it affects recruiting. Obviously, as players, they want to be on a good team, but putting that on their shoulders seems a bit excessive.

Its about creating discipline. Skipping class is just another way for a player to get lazy. To create a culture of winning, they have to do EVERYTHING right. Going to class is a basic thing and easy to monitor.

They're adults - they can make their own decisions as to how to spend their time..
By Law yes, if 18. However ask any of their parents if they consider them adults. Most parents don't consider a kid an adult until out of college. Most of these parents will be greatful that Kill and staff are confirming attendance.

One of the requirements you take on when accepting an athletic scholarship is to go to classes. There may be some players who can afford to skip some classes, but there are a lot of others who can't, and an attitude that it is OK to skip classes is contagious. Insisting that players go to class helps prevent academic problems from starting in the first place. It's a lot easier to get players to class than it is to fix someone who is failing classes. If you're just a regular student, you're not accountable to anyone, skip all the classes you like. But when you're on a team, you have responsibilities.
