So, now that one incredible, electric game has taken place at the new stadium, I think we should start thinking about a nickname for it.

I mean...Michigan has The Big House. OSU has The Horseshoe. Penn State has Happy Valley. Florida has The Swamp. Why can't we have some really cool, unique nickname for our awesome ballpark? Not only will the stadium have more personality, but we won't have to say TCF Bank Stadium all the time. What a mouthful.

We could take a page from this wonderful Web site and go with The Gopher Hole. Or we could take a page from Caddyshack and call it Bushwood, because Gophers ruled that place.

Let's figure this out! Anyone else have any good ideas?

I wouldn't be opposed to the brickhouse either. it was built to remind us of memorial, why not take the nickname too.

The Brick! looks like this.... tBRICK

There was a poll of GopherHole members several months ago. The Brickhouse won handily over all other nicknames.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but its already been nicknamed the bank. Every media outlet in the cities has taken that and ran with it. Hell you even have the PA announcer saying that there's another 6 points in the bank. This victory is in the vault....

I like the brickhouse name, i think its much better, but there's no way it will be changed now. The media has the bank, and is running with it.

I hate the Bank. There were plenty of really bad puns the other night, enough to induce severe vomiting or Dinkytown rioting. It's so corporate, so first-grade.

Even if the media are running with the Bank, that doesn't mean they can't change. The media, in lieu of a better option, will simply make something up until popular opinion causes them to do something else. So right now, they're using the Bank because they need something...and it's a tip of the hat to a business which spends ad dollars on them.

If we want The Brickhouse to stick, and I really do like that name, then we need to use it. Often. All the time. In all kinds of conversations. The students should get a huge sign saying "Welcome to The Brickhouse." There need to be t-shirts with the name on them. Eventually, if it's out there enough, it will catch on...because it won't be cool not to.

AMEN!! :clap::clap:

One of the problems with "The Brickhouse" nickname is that the term "Brickhouse" is very clearly defined in Gopher fans' memories as Memorial Stadium. As much as the new place may resemble the old stadium, this is a new stadium.

I love the name, but im not sure its possible to get it to stick to this building.

It will never be the bank to me, just like "We are Minnesota" will never be a real cheer no matter what they try to make happen. Things should happen organically, not copy-cat and not corporate.

I hated the TCF formation by the band at half time. But I'm pretty sure "The Bank" is going to stick, everyone I know calls it that.

Another way of looking at "the brickhouse" nickname:

Imagine they built us a new basketball arena, made even to resemble Williams. Would it feel right calling it "The Barn"?? Im sorry, but would not feel right to me.

Calling our new Stadium "The Brickhouse" feels just as forced as the other nicknames. You dont have to agree.

I don't have any problem calling it the Brickhouse. It's tradition that the Gophers play OUTDOOR football in the Brickhouse. It's been that way since 1924 and now we're in a new brick stadium across the street from the old one. They didn't change the name of Yankee Stadium when they moved it, so why can't we keep the same nickname for our beautiful new Brickhouse.

And I don't agree. "The Brickhouse" is one of the best nicknames for a college football stadium ever. And for all practical purposes the Gophers own it. The U should copyright the name if they haven't done it already.

Many of the design elements of the new Gophers Stadium are intended to remind people of Memorial Stadium. That is no accident. Everyone who knows me will never misunderstand when I tell them that I went to a football game at The Brickhouse.

Unfortunately, the student T shirts already say something to the effect of "Taking it to the bank" on the back.

Nicknames are something that you can't just decide. Whether anyone here likes it or not, the public has already taken to the name "The Bank". People I work with who are casual fans at best couldn't wait to hear my first impressions of The Bank when I got into work today. This one has stuck, folks.

I agree, it is "The Bank". Until TCF's naming rights are gone, it will be "The Bank". I like it because it is unique to the situation. However, I say "I'm going to the Gopher game" when I talk to friends.:)

It will depend on who will be talking to. Among other nicknames, The HHH Metro Dome is called The Dome, The Hump, The Dump, The Hefty Bag, The Roller Dome, and The Homer Dome.

It has already been decided. The Brickhouse is the official nickname for posters in GopherHole.

The (sad) truth is that "The Bank" has already effectively stuck as the nickname. I was on campus from noon until the end of the game on Saturday, both engaging in and overhearing banter with other fans...I did not hear one person refer to TCF Bank as the "Brickhouse", whereas conversely "The Bank" was running rampant in conversation.

I will say that I'm not 100% married to "The Bank", but referring to it as the "Brickhouse" does sort of seem like living in the past. The future is bright, the future is maroon and gold, let's all move on.

Take the Pledge

I will never refer to the "Brickhouse" as "The Bank" in a post again!

I'm going to call it the DMV or the Emergency Room... the only places where I've seen longer lines.
