For whatever reason, I lost my connection with WCCO radio this morning just before the Jerry Kill segment was to start. When I was able to get the show back on-line, Jerry Kill was finishing up. I'll listen to the podcast and transcribe the segment then.

I did listen to President Eric Kaler's interview with Dave and Sid, which was on at 9:35 a.m. I took some notes and will transcribe them later, too.

Sorry!

Go Gophers!!

I will post the podcast when it comes available but I will be gone until late afternoon.

I was hoping Sid had announced his retirement

The rumor is Sid did ask about the 4 early enrollees. He also called Kill a "genius" and a close, personal friend. Then he said he had a better chance to be Pope than Kill had to win the Rose Bowl.

My notes (only heard 1st half). A lot of talk about future scheduling 1BCS per year and no more FCS. JK said the jury is still out on that. He noted that the SEC won't likely adopt that approach and that he'd talked to a lot of coaches with mixed responses. He likened it to the recent flux on recruiting deregulations (I.e. the final chapter hasn't been written).

JK also talked about the difference between an official visit and an unofficial visit. On an official we can pay for stuff and can show them around within 25 miles of campus, etc. on unofficial we can't pay for stuff but can give them a tour, etc - cant leave campus. Can't work them out on either of these visits. Talked about why camp is so important. That many of our kids camp at the same places MN, NE, IA, WI. Lamented the fact that we can't host officials in June when the weather's great - said he'd like to work to get this changed. Also talked about the fact that they visit spring practice in the south as a way to see kids that don't camp. It's tough because it is at the same time as UM practice.

I had to leave at that point. Most interesting points for discussion were probably his thoughts on NC scheduling, the idea of official visits in June, and perhaps another reason we should have HS spring practice.

I still don't understand why there is no spring football in MN. Didn't understand it 25 years ago when I played and don't understand it today...

For Kill's segment, he talked a lot about a meeting of FB coaches he attended in Arizona. He definitely made it sound like the B1G's new scheduling guidelines were not a done deal. He alluded to discussion about other possible changes in rules, but did not elaborate.

Sid did not ask about the 4 players who enrolled early, BUT he did ask if the teams performance in the Bowl game carried over to Spring Practice.

A few other things I remember - Kill talking about this being an important time for academics. After that, he talked about how the need to keep working in the weight room and keep improving over the summer. Fall practice is only about 3 months away!

As far as Spring HS FB in MN - I don't see it. The Spring season is short already, with teams fighting bad weather. I think the baseball, track and golf coaches would throw a fit if the HS League even thought about allowing Spring FB. IMHO, allowing Spring FB would just push more kids away from being multi-sport athletes, and lead to more "specialization." That may be fine for the metro schools, but the outstate schools are fighting the numbers game in a lot of sports already. They don't need anything that would encourage kids to specialize in 1 sport.

Did he happen to call anyone a "genius"?

Agree at least for the short term. The war between hockey parents and the Minnesota State High School League has subsided somewhat and we see more kids playing in elite teams outside of the season, so those athletes (and their parents) who want to concentrate on one sport now have that option without putting the formal high school system in jeopardy. I forgot to mention it in the column about the Reusse article regarding B1G football talent, but football is "athletic church" in the South and almost every state allows spring practice, which really ramps up the talent and the attention to that talent. I had an acquaintance who taught and coached high school football in Texas and during the off-season, they actually had a class called "Football" at the school. The players all took "Football" class, which largely consisted of football-related conditioning and it served as a health and physical education class. Add to that the fact that there is more and more "kindergarten red-shirting" down there (boys not entering kindergarten until they are 6, supposedly for maturity reasons), and you get some well-developed kids running around high school football fields. Somehow, that practice isn't as widespread north of the Ohio River.

What a great idea. Will have to consider for my 4 month old son. So far his mom has thwarted some of my development efforts. Apparently the 'doctor' thought it would be a bad idea to eschew mothers milk and formula in favor of GNC Amino Muscle Max. Can't win 'em all!!

Muscle Milk is probably served to all boys in daycare down in Texas. It's just nuts down there.

I met a guy once who claimed his wife was to blame for their son being gay. He claimed that she nursed him too long and the nipple of her milk was no longer big enough to satisfy him. Figure that out.

And it wasn't called Muscle Milk...
