Dave Mona and coach Jerry Kill were back on the Sports Huddle. Kill was on for the full half-hour segment, and there were a lot of questions and areas covered:

1) Sid opened asking what the current routine is at the football offices: The team is divided into twelve groups with twelve captains. The team arrives at the weight room at 6:00 a.m. for strength and conditioning drills . . . the players are competing in the conditioning drills. Coaches in the afternoon have been breaking down films from last year's games (evaluating what went right and wrong). They're making preparations for upcoming Junior Days. Coaches from other teams are visiting the Gopher program and they're making plans to visit schools (see item #2). This past week coach Kill met with the coordinators and strength and conditioning staff, as they're looking at where the team is presently at and needed steps to improve the Gophers.

2) Kill listed some of the schools they're going visit and what they're looking at: Going to visit Tony Levine at Houston (talked about Levine's past and connection to the U), Baylor and Texas A&M for offensive material/infodrmation. On the defensive side, they're going to visit Boston College, TCU and Mississippi State. Additionally, Sonny Lubrick, former Colorado State coach will be visiting in February and will meet with the Minnesota staff and will focus the defensive side of the line. Tony Levine will be visiting Minnesota in February and will be a presenter at the Minnesota High School Clinic. The Minnesota Viking kicking coach (didn't get his name) will be visiting this week and discussing the kicking game.

3) Recruiting: "We're always on the hunt for good players." Presently evaluating and recruiting juniors for next years class. The recruiting coordinator receives 75-100 emails and video tapes daily for evaluation. Again, he mentioned that they're making preparations for a couple Junior Day events. They're still looking at possible recruits to fill out this year's class and 3 or 4 walkon recruits that can earn a scholarship, " . . . push for a scholarship."

4) Sid asked about Gray: Kill responded by saying that Gray showed great improvement from the USC game to Illinois . . . "He's getting better." He also mentioned Shortell, briefly. He said Ed Olson is up to 315 pounds. Offensive line "Getting bigger and better in the weight room." (It appears as though Kill doesn't like to focus or elaborate on individual players.)

5) When Sid asked about Stoudermire, Kill responded by saying it's good to have him back. He then said that they improved themselves in the secondary through this years recruiting class and that there are some real good players already on campus (referencing, I believe, redshirts and the young players that saw the field this past season).

6) Mona then asked a series of questions, including: Fans at spring practices - Kill doesn't see any changes - "This is Minnesota's team." The players practice better when there are fans present . . . puts pressure on the players to perform better.

7) UNLV game to Thursday night: "I've gotten one call from the UNLV head coach." He's had some discussion with the Minnesota administration about a possible change. A Thursday night game, if covered nationally would be a good thing. There's plus and minuses for having the game on a Thursday. May be a problem for those that have already or are in the process of making arrangements to attend the game. A Saturday game and subsequent late arrival back to the Twin Cities would hurt preparations for the next game . . . a Thursday game would provide an extra day of preparation. Kill said he would like the powers to do what is best for the players.

8) Sid asked another question about walkons: The recruiting of possible walkons is ongoing. If they have a couple schollies available (year to year) they'd like to reward players that start and contribute. This past year they gave out 4 or 5 scholarships to walkons that have contributed heavily to the team. "You play the best players (whether they're scholarship players or walkons)."

9) Mona, report via twitter, James Manuel being swtiched to linebacker: Kill said they've discussed the possiblity of a position change with Manuel; however, they'll study and evaluate his play at safety during spring ball. If he struggles at safety they may move him to outside linebacker. He then said the outside linebacker position and safety position are very similar in today's defenses. Kill then reiterated, saying they brought in a lot of good DBs (recruiting class) and they already have talent on campus.

10) Sid asked if there are anyother position changes in the near future and Kill said no. However, Sid then asked about Moses Alipate's switch to TE. Kill said he's been working on his receiving. Took him some time to convince Moses to make the switch from QB to TE.

11) Foster Bush: "Bush is upto 305 pounds . . . he's athletic and strong . . . we have a lot of those players." Joe Bjorkland weighs 298 pounds and grew an inch and is presently six foot six. There are nine offensive linemen that played last year. (Kill sounded excited about the offensive line.) "They're competing in the weight room and watching what they eat." S&C coach attends the meals and watches their food intake. "We've got to recruit and build them up."

12) Josh Campion: He's going through the workouts and will participate in spring ball. You have to be aware of the seriousness and ramifications of concussions . . . have to be careful.

13) Summer camps will start in June - 2 camps within 3 weeks - and a camp in July. Camps are important in the evaluation and recruiting process.

Go Gophers!!

I listened today also, and DL knocked 'em dead with his summary.

Good job, and Thanks, DL.

Thanks DL!!!

I am really excited about our O-Line too!

Thanks DL65. Your posts are one of the best things about the Gopherhole.

Thanks DL!!!

Ditto. Looks like Coach Kill is bent on creating a B1G Hog Farm. If we can get the axe and Floyd every year, I'll be one happy camper.

I can picture the players lined up on the same side of the table. Sitting across from them is a man, expressionless, arms crossed, just waiting for one of them to reach for a french fry so that he may unleash his fury.

Thanks DL. This summary made my day because Kill confirmed my obvious assertion that moving the UNLV game to Thursday is an advantage for the following game. Since I'm wrong at least 95% of the time regarding such things, it's nice to know the blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then. Anyway, it's great you're willing to post these summaries. Thanks again.

I thought Kill said he didn't want a recruiting coordinator. I wonder who it is.

That's an interesting development. The measurables have always been there with him, it's just hasn't translated to field for some reason or another. I'm still hoping he can step up his game at safety.

Kill also mentioned that if they award a scholarship to a walk on who's been there for two years, the scholarship does NOT count toward the 85.

DL also left out Sid's overall confusion in identifying who Alipate was, talking about "that Quarterback Marcus," and his trying to end the show 5 minutes early. Other than that, he was fine.

I should say I support Sid's support of the program. I do not support his on-air efforts. Dave would be fine, if not better without him.

I am pretty sure scholarships awarded to walk ons count towards 85. Otherwise why wouldn't all walk ons get scholarships after 2 years. I think he meant towards the yearly 25.

He clearly used the words "toward the 85". Let's check the podcast....

Yeah cuz nobody has ever misspoke on the radio. All schollies count against the 85 but it makes sense not to count a player against the 25 after they have been on campus for 2 years.

Go Gophers!!

The Gopher softball team played in Las Vegas this weekend. I was able to attend parts of the games played today. I spoke with an associate AD, can't remember which one. He said exactly the same - adding that the Thursday game would provide "competitive advantages." The exact ones mentioned above, plus getting to start fall practice 2 days earlier. He thought a decision was coming in the next next couple of weeks. My money is on a Thursday game. Go Gophers!

You are correct. After two years the initial aid counts against the 85 but not the 25:

15.5.6.3.6 Aid First Awarded After Second Year. [FBS/FCS]A student-athlete who has been in residence
at the certifying institution for at least two academic years may receive athletically related financial
aid for the first time without such aid counting as an initial award, provided the aid falls within the overall
grant limitation. (Adopted: 1/11/89, Revised: 1/10/90 effective 8/1/90).

It is reported that we have 27 initial and 84 total counters to date with one initial counter left to give. That may mean 3 of the current 27 will greyshirt since the B10 doesn't allow SEC style over-signing.

Reportedly, BN is looking for a linebacker but won't force the issue. If none is found then the door opens for one walk-on to possibly earn a scholarship for this next season - irrespective of 15.5.6.3.6.

Regards.

I also got a kick out of Sid's column on Sunday, where he was talking about Mbakwe's sixth year application. Sid noted that Troy Stoudermire recently received a sixth year after missing most of his senior season. Of course, that is untrue. Troy received a fifth year. I know an innocent enough mistake, but there are some major differences in a fifth year and a sixth year in the NCAA's eyes.

Sid's not the only one. Just about every story in print and on the air has mentioned Stoudermire's "6th year". Oh, well.

You guys are correct on the walk-on schollie award. From what I have read, all schollies count toward the 85, except for players that have career ending injuries. If a player signs off that he is too injured to ever play again, he still gets his full scholarship. The catch is he can never play again, but he also does not count against the limit of 85.

Small Correction

I believe that the NCAA also has to sign off that the player can never play again.

The Gophers' opponent for week #2, New Hampshire, would be at a distinct disadvantage if the Gophers get that Thursday night game on week #1, not that it's a bad thing...

So, New Hampshire could change their schedule to an opening Thursday Night game, and the playing field would be equal.

Or maybe New Hampshire could change its opening game to Wednesday night...thereby putting the Gophers at a distinct competitive disadvantage...

New Hampshire IS playing Thursday, August 30 at Holy Cross.

The Thursday UNLV game is a must, not a want. See you there.

The thought of Gopher football staffers -- 6+ months from now -- pouring over film of the New Hampshire vs. Holy Cross game...trying to glean info on tendencies, strengths, weaknesses, etc....in order to prepare a winning game plan for week #2...is borderline hilarious to me

Why is that hilarious?

You don't think it will be happening?

We're doomed, their game will be done approximately 3 hours before ours.
