Coach Kill will be on shortly. Mona said Kill will take questions from the listeners.

Go Gophers!!

Wha?

Thanks for the tip. Listened over the web.

Hadn't heard this before. Listening to Coach Kill this AM....

We have only 71 scholorship players?

I missed something...haven't we almost oversigned each of Brewster's years? I guess losing guys like B Smith and now Bryant....are hard to replace with signing 25 each year. I wouldn't have thought so...I but I guess it is.

I'll give a recap after the segment ends.

Yeah, I was encouraged with his response about recruiting MN kids. He pretty much said why go out and get linemen when you have a lot of big dudes right here (paraphrasing). I have been critical of people that seem to think we can be successful by just bringing all the local kids that seem to think they deserve to play for the U, but offensive line is one position where that can be the case. Get the goons locally and the skill from elsewhere!

Couple comments:
What a breath of fresh air on walk-ons.

And it's obvious this guy is a guy who understands all the steps needed and plans for them. Attention to detail. You don't hope to have a great program, you build it one step at a time.

Nice to have a guy who reflects Minnesota values...a great fit!

My notes...

- Kill believes B1G is the toughest conf in the country
- Believes Gophers schedule should include a marque' game and then winnable games for the rest
- likes recruited walk-ons...earn a scholorship
- MG needs to make a lot of good decision
- QB coach is coming - Sombrowski
- QB needs to put in extra time to be great

- research the last 30 years where the players have come from...can recruit again Jan 3rd. Full staff will be here this week...or at least close to it...not sure if I got the exact quote right.

Couple clarifications:
We're below our allowed amount of scholly players because we've had people leave, not get in, flunk out, etc. Brew got football star players, not academic/attitude star players.

As for coaches, he can't tell exactly who's coming because some may want to stay w NIU and it's decision time for them now. He did say he hoped to have everyone that's coming here on Monday if possible.

Somewhere in brain there is the idea that if your coach leaves and you transfer out of conference, you don't have to sit out a year. Is this correct? Or some old rule that doesn't exist?

I had to address a situation that needed immediate attention, so I wasn't able get the recap as quickly as promised. Good comments/recap above. Some additional comments:

1) Dead period (recruiting) starts tomorrow, which he said would allow him to put his staff together and get organized.
2) Skill positions are a present concern . . . depth at wide receiver . . . a rusing DE is key.
3) Must be selective in recruiting and will seek maybe 2 or 3 JUCO players, but emphasis will be on long term players (high school recruits).
4) Feels good about getting most of the assistants that are at NIU.
5) Quality of state recruits: Must take care of the home state recruits . . . they play good football in the state . . . good high school coaches . . . good linemen.
6) Short or small goals: Develop a work ethic and get better everyday. Must take care of the small goals before pursuing the big goals. His answer was after Dave asked about Bowl games.
7) Walkon program is extremely important in developing depth. Seven of NIU's starters last night were walk-ons (coach Kill was a walk-on during his college playing days).
8) In addition to rushing DE and WR other needs include DBs and a kicker.

Go Gophers!!

I guess I'm just stunned over 4 classes of signing at least 20 or even 25....that we are 14 short. Wow.

He also mentioned things are still up in the air until finals are over and there might be more attrition with attitude and work ethic. He didn't say it in those words, but thats the drift I got?!?

Doesn't surprise me. I think this is always a concern when you bring in a new coach who has a more aggressive approach to conditioning and practice speed.

Keep in mind there have been a number of JUCO's over that time. We were very short in the Mason classes toward the end.
