Jerry Kill's comments this morning on the Sports Huddle:

1) Coaches are on the road recruiting. They're gathering information about potential recruits (academic transcripts and talking to school officials) and watching high school spring ball activities where its allowed, which is quite common across the country.

2) Coach Kill has been busy evaluating spring practice film and will start meeting individually with the players. The players also meet with their position coaches and coach Kill will look at the strength results of the players. They will outline expectations and goals for the off-season. Off-season season training and discipline by the players is extremely important. The off-season practice, training, strength work, etc. will go a long way toward progress in the upcoming season.

3) The team accomplished a lot during spring ball, however, there's a long way to go.

4) This year's high school recruits that signed LOI will arrive on campus around June 11. They'll be in class during the summer (6 hrs) getting acclimated to college scene and learning how to study at the college level. They'll also be working with coach Klein getting stronger and with the on-campus players (coach Kill is depending on the returning players to help with the new players during the summer, adjusting to college ball and practice.).

5) Over 600 youth participated in the Youth Clinic this past week.

6) Over 200 former lettermen were on campus and many attended a Coach Warmath gathering/celebration of life. Jim Carter organized the gathering.

7) Strength workouts during the summer are at 6 a.m., mid-morning and in the afternoon, which will meet the school schedules of the players.

8) Coach Kill said Duane Bennett stood out in spring practices. (Did some nice things from the slot position.) He also singled out the defensive line which he said was terrible at the start of practice, however, they made great strides during the 15 practices.

9) His summer camps are important in evaluating potential recruits. They've reduced camp costs to get more campers.

10) Evaluaton of current players: "I speak with each player and I tell them what they've got to do to play at this level. I'm blunt and honest with the players."

Go Gophers!!

Thanks, DL. Your work is really appreciated!

ditto. I no longer get the Sports Huddle up here when Coach Kill is talked with, so DL65, your summaries and reports are greatly appreciated. Thanks tons.

I hope those youth clincs...

Are used to spread "Gopher Fever" in the young ones. We need to start growing crops of kids who dream of the Maroon and Gold.

Honest question: are FBS schools allowed to give football players athletic scholarships over the summer? Otherwise, how are the players paying the summer tuition, not to mention rent, food, etc.? Or is there a cafeteria in B-N complex that serves food to players for free? They'd still have to worry about rent (or Summer on-campus housing) and summer tuition.

The athletic scholarships pick up their housing and food when they move in in June. It doesn't start in September.

I sure hope so. I don't think you can just tag on summer expenses to the fall bill. I think it has to be paid in the summer.

I'm sure the folks at the U whose job is to understand these issues might have some idea of what they are doing. But that's just a guess.

As is any opinion not based on facts. :)

It is.

It's like Marcus Jones for instance, he gets a full ride (schooling and living expenses). He isn't paying his own way right now because in our world his scholarship doesn't start until next year. He is on scholarship right now, living on campus and getting it paid for. He won't, but he could RS this season and stay another 4 years and still be under scholarship.

The scholarship doesn't start in the fall, it starts when that student graduates HS and enrolls in school. If he graduates in December, he can enroll in January. If he graduates in May/June, he can enroll for summer classes.

This is a complete non-issue.

I think your conclusion that this is a non-issue is correct, but specifically, isn't Jones one of the mid-year signees whose scholarship actually counts against 2010?

All I wanted to make sure of was that any high school senior who graduates in May/June and then "volunteers" (WINK-WINK) to enroll in summer class at the U isn't having to pay summer session tuition out of his (or his parents) pocket.

If the football team is going to make (whoops...I mean suggest) incoming true freshman enroll in summer class then they better be paying for the tuition and living expenses.

That's all. Though I'm not completely satisfied that summer tuition/dorm/etc can simply be picked up by the team with zero consequence in terms of scholarship equivalencies, I don't really want to look up the rules.

You're right.

But my point was that, Jones could enroll into school in December (have it paid for by the U) and it as far as his eligibility clock it starts the same as any other freshman. He doesn't have to wait until his real freshman year to start getting school paid for.

It's not a wink/wink sort of thing. It's been going on for a long time and many schools are completely open about the entire situation, talk about it on their website. They want to give the freshman a head start on the amount of credits they need and there is also a window in like July where the coaches can meet with the kids who are enrolled in summer classes and signed a LOI. It's not even like a greyshirt, wink and a nod sort of thing. It is a standard practice that is completely allowed by the NCAA.

It's something that's been going on at schools for years, it's commonly called a "Summer Bridge" program or something to thaty effect. It seems to be something you are really concerned about it and it would take you a 1 minute google search for you to find out.

You are tiresome. I am hoping you are squarely in the crosshairs of dpodoll's radar.

Good to see that you have moved on from constantly and unnecessarily defending Weber to unnecessarily defending some random guy on GH. Time well spent.

NDSU does this as well. I know of a current player on their roster that was asked to come up in the summer after he graduated HS and then ended up getting redshirted anyway.

I have him on ignore...and I think the best thing we can do is to never respond to his posts and carry on business as usual. Kind of like the whole "stand still, as the predator can only sense motion".
