After a two-week hiatus, I'm back.
Questions and comments by coach Kill on today's Sports Huddle are as follows:
1) Two recent recruits (late additions) to this year's roster: After spring ball we deteremined the roster had deficiencies at the quarterback and receiver positions. Dexter Foreman, dual-threat quarterback from Texas is "an athlete that can do a lot of different things." We look for quarterbacks that can do a lot of things (so they can be moved to other positions, if the qb slot doesn't work out.). Wide receiver Malcom Moulton from Fort Scott, KS JC . . . is very athletic and quick (4 of his teammates are starters at Nebraska . . . strong program).
2) Off-season training: One group meets at 6 a.m. and the other at 2 p.m. They're spending time with strength coach working on strength and conditioning (important facet). Players are organizing their drills, which take place at least a couple times a week.
3) Academics: Team's cummulative GPA after spring semester is 2.87. Credit goes to the school's Academic Center . . . Kill cited the counselors that joined the center shortly before Kill's hire . . . one is from Northwestern and the other comes to the U from Florida State University. They made sure the kids went to class and tutoring sessions. "Need more tutoring help." Academic standards continue to go up that are related to APR and graduation rates. Greater accountability is being placed on the players . . . "Kids have to make sure they do well in the classroom." Kill went on to say, "I'm a strong believer in academics."
4) Scholarship allotments for 2012: Kill said he expects to have the full allotment. Previous recruiting classes are not very balanced (will work their way through the situation). Does not expect to lose anymore players to academics; however, he'll know more after summer school is completed. He said some players dig themselves into difficult situations (academics). Did not name the player (DL) that reportedly is transferring, but "It was a struggle for him here." "We're working to save every kid - academically - there's small room for error." A DL scholarship became available because of the DL that is leaving the U.
5) Josh Campion from Fergus Falls went to prep school and was offered by U of Miami. "He's a yes sir and no sir type of kid." Has four years eligibility.
Devon Wright - prop 48 kid. "We're getting to know him" - hard worker - busted his rear in classroom. Looking forward to two-a-days so they can see what he can do. Heard a lot of good things about his abilities.
6) Offered quite a few kids out of the summer camps and we're looking good with some of the kids. Summer camps are important because we can view the players up close and personal, otherwise they'd probably have to wait and watch the players through 4 or 5 games in the fall before tendering an offer.
7) Coach Kill will be meeting with some business executives this week for dinner. According to Sid, the executives have made some recent donations to the U.
Go Gophers!!
