Because of Coach Kill's health problem and hospitalization, offensive coordinator Matt Limegrover was today's guest on the Sports Huddle.

1) Coach Kill's current condition: Coach Claey (representing the coaching staff) visited Coach Kill last night at about 9:30. He said Kill was resting comfortably, aware of everything that went on, and was trying to calm down . . . soreness of the body is the side effect of the trauma of a seizure. He has good awareness. It's a condition that he has, and when a seizure occurs there's not much you can do . . . he'll be back Wednesday chewing on the players (what he's told the players). "We don't discount it when it occurs . . . takes the wind out of you . . . you try to reassure them it looks worse than it really is."

2) Yesterday's game: It's a process . . . trying to learn the strengths and weaknesses of the team. Must work the team to get them in a position to win. Coaches on both sides of the ball are not happy. The coaches must bear the responsibility of getting the players ready to play.

3) Failure to score from the one in the fourth quarter: Coach Limegrover took respnsibility for failing to score. Wanted the backs to run downhill . . . didn't happen.

4) Dropped passes: Was frustrating for all involved, especially during third downs. Need to convert third downs to stay on the field and keep drives alive. Point of emphasis: must make the most of the opportunities presented.

5) Playing so many freshman (according to Sid): There's some good players here. Transformation is difficult to bring about . . . getting everybody on the same page . . . can't speed it up . . . it's a process and gaining game experience is extremely important, which we're doing with young players and that bodes well for the future.

6) Mental or physical?: Mental, we'e not there yet. The players want to succeed; they've put in the work . . . sometimes they try too hard. We need to make sure the players are having fun . . . we don't want them to play as robots. They're trying so hard and sometimes it restricts you and what you're trying to do.

7) Officiating: Coach Kill expressed his displeasure with the officials for a non-call of a receiver being held.

8) Game of inches: Gray out of bounds by a few inches . . . if they had scored, Limegrover would have liked their chances in an overtime . . . we had momentum at the time, however, failure to score stalled the momentum . . . we didn't do the little things.

9) Miami of Ohio: We need to stress and find ways to eliminate the mistakes of the past two weeks . . . we need to have a great week of practice.

10) Fans: Highs and lows of the first two weeks is not where we are right now . . . it's a process and not an overnight thing, and as coach Kill says, "We'll build on concrete and not sand."

Go Gophers!!

interesting....While the coaches say all the right things, I as a fan was quite disappointed with the product they produced yesterday. I will be patient with the coaches and their program, but at some point their words are just that.....words

Most interesting thing I noticed is that Limegrover references them playing like robots. It appears they are playing this way especially on offense in the running game. It looks slow, where players are focused/concerned if they are in the right spot and not focusing on what the opposing players are doing.

Perhaps our coaching staff is treating these nonconference games like NFL preseason games? Why not, especially if they have determined that our chances of going to a bowl game are slim. Therefore, they may have been calling plays, formations, and situations which are designed to teach and find out who has talent, rather than maximizing our probability for winning the game. It is absolutely OK with me if Coach Kill and his staff use the first four games as a laboratory experiment and teaching moments, even if it means sacrificing some wins. We were very competitive in both games. The game was not lost until somewhere between 20 and 8 seconds to go in the 2nd half. We have been losing for years, so why not use these nonconference games as laboratory experiments and teaching moments? Having said that, I would hope the experimentation and training ends at The Little Brown Jug.

And this coaching staff wouldn't blame you for thinking that at all or be upset with you for thinking it. Coach Kill's mantra from Day 1 has been "I hear what you say but I'll trust what you do."

We have to be patient. Kill has said this is more like the SIU program then the NIU program he took over. Yesterday showed that. Gray is playing more like a robot than anyone. He left rushing yards on the field with being to robot like at times. At the end of the day, they played terrible and still should have went to OT or won. Mental errors and dropped balls killed them.

DL65, I want to be the latest in a long line to thank you. To get the essential content without having to hear Sid's voice is something I really appreciate.

Out of deference to Coach Kill, I will wait till Wednesday to Post my 10 offensive suggestions. Not one is changing QB.

I was sort of thinking much the same thing(especially after we hear the robotic comment from Lime). I wondered about all the rotation of players and whether that really benefits the continuity of the series or of the game. I watched D-lineman(and others) sprint on and off the field almost at each play scratching my head, thinking how would they catch their breath or are we trying to get more game experience and stamina in reality?

I have set my expectation a lot lower now and hope to see improvement, even minor, from week to week.

I, like you, would like to see us unleash something, for a trophy game or let it all hang out after several of these type of experiments, or learning moments, if this is what it is.

I will say that it is refreshing the coaches take responsibility for not having the team ready. That said, hearing that after every game will get old quick. Our inability to run the ball against an awful small school was pathetic. We seem to be lacking a will to win. Not sure where we are going to find it.

Saw Matt Spaeth catch a td today for Chicago and starting remembering how good we were for a few years. One game from a Big Ten title, so close to beating Michigan that year at the dome and all those guys that had nfl careers. Miss those guys on a day like yesterday.

Straight up worst play of the game was his interception he threw right after our defense finally got pressure on their qb and forced a turnover. Gray give it back at midfield in one play. Defense probably didn't even have time for gatorade. Just awful.

There is no pressure up front and until that changes wins will be slim. Sorry folks we need better talent up front to win even the small games.
