I imagine this will result in the CFP Standings receiving even more hype next year, likely starting earlier and potentially including a weekly "CFP Standings Show" to unveil each weeks movement.

per SportingNews:

In its first year, the four-team playoff system for college football's biggest schools and conferences is a certified smash.

First, the numbers. The New Year's Day doubleheader produced more than 28 million viewers per game, making them the two highest-rated telecasts since the dawn of cable.

ESPN drew 28.2 million for Oregon's 59-20 blowout of Florida State, according to CNN. Ohio State beat Alabama 42-35, a much closer game that pulled 28.3 million viewers in prime time.

As expected, ESPN extolled the virtues of its programming. It noted it now holds the 18 biggest audiences in cable/satellite history. It also touted a 50 percent increase in Rose Bowl viewers and a 150 percent boost in Sugar Bowl viewers.

Go Gophers!!

Didn't lower the viewership for the other 6 either.

On New Year’s Eve, the Peach, Fiesta and Orange Bowls combined to average a 4.3 rating and 7.1 million viewers, the highest-rated and most-viewed NYE bowl tripleheader on an ESPN network since 1990. In addition, the viewership is up 53% from last year’s tripleheader and ratings were up 54%. Individually, all fared well.

  • The Peach Bowl with TCU blowing out Mississippi, averaged 5,013,000 viewers and a 3.4 rating.
  • The Fiesta Bowl which had Boise State beating Arizona easily, saw an average of 7,406,000 viewers and a 4.6 rating.
  • And the Orange Bowl pitting Georgia Tech and Mississippi State, garnered 8,935,000 viewers with a 5.0 rating making that the most-viewed New Year’s Eve game on ESPN in its history..
  • UPDATE: Final viewership numbers are in and the first CFP semifinals didn’t just score big, they made history. The 2015 Sugar Bowl and Rose Bowl are now the two most watched programs in the history of cable television with OSU-Bama just barely beating out FSU-Oregon. Both games surpass the previous record set by the 2011 BCS National Championship Game of 27.3 million viewers.

How did the other 4 big 6 bowls compare to the non-championship BCS bowls in terms of ratings?

Last years triple header compared to this years is apples/oranges considering this years put 3 of the top 6 bowls in and last years had 0 of the top 5.
