BETH GOETZ ON SPORTS HUDDLE 08/16/2015

Hearing that Bet Goetz was going to be on the air later in the show, I decided to listen to her before I did errands and summarize the Jerry Kill portion.

Here is the summary:

P.S. - Beth Goet'z Bio is attached below.

Dave opened by saying that up to a week ago listeners have not heard about her.

What's the 1st week like with Beth doing her administrative duties, and there is a gap in responsibilities now that Norwood Teague is gone. Is her life going to change?

Beth said with her day to day responsibilities, in a lot of ways it is business as usual for her team. They have a great team, and they are focused.

Dave brought up the fundraising efforts. People have been impressed with her first week, with the interviews, and her profile.

How does she intend to do fund raising which is a huge effort? Lou Nanne has also been on the scene. How does she intend to do that? Is that going to be her major focus? Is she going to get other help.

Beth said no doubt that is where the priorities lie. It speaks for the relationships donors and the community have with the UofM.

That is where their support and loyalty lie (not with Norwood Teague implied). They are going to continue to focus on direct conversations with donors (and those she's been in touch with over the previous week). They are committed to continue their support of the UofM and the building project. They know what that means to their 725 student athletes.

Sid asked how close they are to securing the money for the building project by September or October. Beth feels they are going to be in a great position for final board approval.

Dave pointed out the tremendous amount of money from the B1G Network, championships, and elsewhere that feed into the athletic department coffers. When originally announced the entire $150-$190 million burdens rest entirely on fundraising efforts. Is there a target number where if a certain amount is reached they can bridge the rest thru financing against future income?

Beth said they are looking at all options, but they are really confident of donor support. They are focusing on that now. Certainly are committed to looking at other options. They are committed to getting the building projects done by this Fall.

Sid asked about the morale of the department, and also said he and Beth never crossed paths at the Athletic Department. He is there almost everyday. He reiterate she has a tough job, and if she going to raise another $30-$40 million.

She said her job is more about being out with the community, coaches, and student athletes rather than sitting in the office. She thinks her team has done a great job and are really pulling together. There are no challenges they are not prepared for. They really feel good about the relationships they have with donors and those who are committed to helping in getting the project done.

Dave mentioned that in her recent profile she mentioned she was an athlete herself, and made light of the fact that at her age (41) most young listeners look at her as a young person. Does she still identify with these kids who are all of a sudden twenty years younger than her?

She really does. As the years past, it feels like a long time ago. But, she still remembers what it felt like to be out there and put on the uniform, and have pride in the institution and know what that means. She certainly felt grateful everyday for how it helped her develop as a person and how it gave her great opportunities after college.

Sid said he talked to Dan O'Brien and Jerry Kill everyday and they have high regards for her, and they get along great. She said the feeling is mutual. There are no better great people to be around with with their work ethic and commitment to do things the right way for the right reasons. She said they have great a team in the Athletic Department and great leaders, and that is going to pull them forward.

Missed the question after the commercial break. She said "...focus on the job that is in front of you and prepare for the opportunity that could lead you. That is certainly what I am inspired to do throughout my career." (Is this a hint she is interested in the AD job?)

Sid thinks they should hire somebody from within the department. They've had bad luck hiring outside people. Dan OBrien and John Anderson have been around a long time, and are very capable. And Beth also although not as long. (Sid mumbled) They all know the situation, so why don't they hire from within? Sid said they should also consider her for the AD job.

Beth said the two people he mentioned are certainly great and has a lot to offer the institution. The president and the Board Of Regents will evaluate what they think is best for the program moving forward.

Dave asked so much of athletics is about preserving what you have. You don't want to cut programs so you raised money to preserve what you have.

He had a conversation once with Dave Stieb (sp?) the head of HS sports. He talked about a forward looking program. You lose sight of growing programs that have tremendous appeal to youths in trying to preserve and maintain what you currently have. He picked La Crosse as an example which have great appeal to some of the finest athletes in the state now.

Beth said that is a great point that should be looked at. It is important to maintain and help what programs you already have. But, you have to be forward thinking and be aware of what the national landscape is, and what is important to the folks in the state. She thinks that is a great point and understands La Crosse is a growing sport in the state.

Dave asked where The U stands in terms of ticket sales for the TCU game, and if she expects a sellout.

She said there are under 5000 tickets remaining, and she is confident those will be gone before game day.

Sid thanked her for being in the show and he will mail a certificate to Murray's to her. Dave interrupted and said Sid should deliver it to her since they haven't met yet.

Dave thinks that Bet Goetz is one of the solid hires since Joel Maturi left. Sid said she may get the job. Jerry Kill will have now problems with that. Dan O'Brien naturally wants the job. He's had eleven years experience as an AD at two schools according to Sid. He'd like to see him get the job, and he thinks he is good.

He spoke with Pat Reusse who said they did not have anybody qualified, but he didn't agree with Reusse.

Sid said he goes to the athletic complex almost everyday, and he thinks John Anderson is the best fundraiser they have over there outside of Jerry Kill. Jerry Kill has raised most of the money that's been raised so far, and Norwood Teague has raised nothing.

Dave raised a question to Sid that is being kicked around in social media: "Do you think Eric Kaler is responsible for the hiring of Norwood Teague?" Sid said they hired a search committee that spent over a $100,000. He did not know anything about Norwood Teague. He took the advise of the search committee. Dave corrected Sid, the search committee plus the search firm they hired out of Atlanta Georgia that they used many times before. They recommended Norwood Teague.

Another social media questions Dave raised with Sid is, "Why did the StarTribune choose not to release the story of Teague's sexual harassment of Amelia Rayno?" Sid said she did not want to release it. That is why. He said she is such a great gall, he sits next to her on most of the basketball games. She is such a delight, and such a good writer. He said he wouldn't know what he'd have done with Teague. He would've gone physical with him. Dave said being physical quite possibly would not be a good thing now. Physically or mentally, he'll need to think about that one.

Found out absolutely nothing noteworthy as expected but the last part made it well worth the read. The image I have of Sid and Norwood trading punches is one to enjoy. Thanks for posting.

Sid would give him the old North Side Tongue Kick, then run him over with his Caddy

Thank your for the recap. Earlier this week Doogie (so take it with a grain of salt), said the Basketball people would love for Goetz to be the new A.D. while the football people would love for it to be O'Brien.
