Spencer was on with Reusse & Mackey this evening. Here are notes on the conversation. These are not verbatim, but are close. I left out some discussion on the Illinois game as it's been rehashed so much already. Here is a link for the full replay:

Spencer on Illinois game...When we were up 14-2 we said on the radio that is when you have to put your foot on the gas. I thought the last game, the Illinois game was a must win. This one certainly feels like more of a must win and I didn't know it could before the Illinois game but it certainly feels like a must win on Thursday.

Spencer on Illinois more...When you look at the last time we played we blew them out. You'd think you could do that at home. The loss of Rodney hurt but that shouldn't hurt the ability to win the game. There were a lot of dejected fans and players who left the game on Thursday. To Illinois' credit they made some good second half adjustments.

Spencer on Joe Coleman who had 29 last game at Illinois...
A lot of it has to do with how they (the team) has been playing lately. When they slow it down it doesn't bode well for him. When you do, it forces you to use your skill and knowledge and that doesn't bode well for him. When you get up and down the floor he plays well. They (Illinois) made it a half court game this time and we all know how that goes.

Spencer on the Gophers talent...It's tough and that's why this season is tough. They finally have the talent, they have the talent at the PG position which they've lacked the last few years. Trevor is back and shades of his former self. Athletes are a product of their environment, you lose a couple and things go into a tailspin and that's contagious. Hopefully they can bonce back against Wisconsin. There is still a lot of season left and things could line up nicely with a few resume boosting wins as the opportunity is there.

Spencer on what he'd fix in the half court offense...Guys just aren't making shots. I've never coached a day in my life but I'd do something to keep people moving. When we struggle they lack movement. When you play against guys in the Big Ten they are all good players. I would do something to keep guys moving. I would insert some more motion and not rely on guys taking really hard shots. That being said Tubby has tried to do some of that and the defense is dictating what the offense is doing or the guys aren't executing.

Spencer on Eliason...He finally looks comfortable out there. He needs to rebound, play defense, block shots and be a good protector of the rim on the weak side and score to keep defense honest. I've been impressed with his production the last few games. He's a good guy, a little bit quiet. He's one of the tougher guys on the team. In practice he won't take anything from anybody. He's tougher than people give him credit for.

Spencer on whether this team will be different than last five years...I don't know. I think its tough to say right now. Sports and sales its what have you done for me lately. This is no doubt the most talent Tubby has had at Minnesota. This is the type of team that we saw in stretches last year that when we get in a rhythm that when we get on a run they can be very dangerous. They have the fire power from the guard position and with Trevor down low. That would be the one thing that leads me to believe that they can get going.

Spencer on the Hollins boys playing together...
They got to play well together and make shots. Through the course of the Big Ten one makes shot and the other doesn't and vice versa. They have to play well together.

Go Gophers!!

Bleed, again, thanks.

I don't doubt EE is a tough-minded dude.

Some people don't appreciate big guys who aren't athletes or who dont score 12 pts a game. Plenty of teams would love his services. He is starting to hit that 12-15 foot jump shot, which makes him more dangerous than Coleman and Rodney right there...LOL. He is a good rebounder, passer, and plays hard. I wish he could gather and score near the rim better and I wish he would stop complaining on every foul, other than that I am pretty happy with his development.

He's nice to have on the back end when pressing too.
