Sounds like the Xcel Center enjoyed the Gopher victory as well

From the "bonus" takeaway at the bottom (the unfortunate "Indiana" misspelling is Mike Doyle's, I just copied):

Bonus Take: A St. Cloud State kid just can’t avoid living in Gopher country—even at an NHL game. During the second period intermission, the PA announced that the Gopher Basketball team beat top ranked Indian, 77-73. No big deal, right? Wrong. The Wild faithful went nuts followed by the MINNESOTA chant (don’t know what it’s called; don’t really care). Don’t care how long I live in the Twin Cities, I will never enjoy, partake nor cheer during that chant; too many bad memories. But that’s what makes sports great. You don’t have to like all the same teams and it was cool to see a pro sports arena cheering wildly about college sports, even if I hate the chant

That's really cool - wonder if there's any video out there of this.

Actually kind of an inappropriate take for the Wild website.

I don't know. I think it was cool that they announced it, cool that the crowd responded, and don't really care that the St. Cloud alum reminded us that he doesn't like the Gophers.

I could see myself making similar comments if I were a writer for the Blackhawks and Northwestern knocked off the number one. Something like "as much as I hate that 'On U Northwestern' song from the times they beat my beloved Gophers..."

Example here...I have no extreme love for wrestling. But I still root for the Gopher Wrestlers to do well, I just don't follow. If I am at a BB game and it is announced at the BB game that the Gopher Wrestlers beat Iowa, I will cheer loudly. I just love all Gopher sports, just some more than others. If I had free tickets to a Gopher Football game and a Vikings FB game, I would choose the Gophers, but would still be hoping that the Vikings win. And would cheer. I just love ALL Minnesota TEAMS, because I am a Minnesotan. I even root for MSUMoorhead to beat NDSU in anything.

And when SCSU isn't playing my Gophers, or when they don't have a chance to win the McNaughten by beating someone else, I cheer for the Huskies, because they are a Minnesota based team. I always want my Gophers to finish one spot ahead of SCSU or UMD or MnSt or Bemidji St, but if its already past the point where the Gophers can qualify, but one of those 4 teams can, I cheer for them.

Why?! Because we're the BIG BROTHER, the more successful, taller, better looking, smarter, richer, stronger, more talented, older brother. We pick on our little brothers, push em around, beat em up, laugh at them, make jokes about them, and best them every chance we get, and enjoy every second of it. And we do it so often, that when on the rare occasion that one of our little brothers bests us, we aren't happy about it, in fact, its infuriating, but, we can still kind of be proud of our little brother for occasionally growing some stones and occasionally putting it all together and showing us up. And we respond simply by rising to the challenge and usually kick the living crap out of them the next time.

But from their perspective, they are literally jealous as hell of us, they hate us, they resent us, they cheer against us, they never want us to do well, whether they are still in the hunt or not, they have a huge complex about it and always, ALWAYS will. It's classic big brother/little brother syndrome, and it doesn't bother me one bit that they are that way. Not one bit. I don't look down on them for being that way either, despite giving them immense amounts of sh1t about it like I do, lol.

If you were a writer for a newspaper yes. A PR hack (that is what he is) for a pro team, no. The article should be about the Gophers and the Wild fans, not about Mike Doyle. He is not writing a blog, he is writing for the team.

I would be willing to wager that his boss pointed that out to him shortly after it was published.

Actually, it is a blog. It is called "Five Take-Aways" and Doyle offers personal opinion and insight on five things. This wasn't an article "about the Gophers and Wild fans." It was an extra paragraph added to his post-game blog. The blog is designed for him to offer opinion. I would be willing to take you up on your wager. I doubt his boss pointed anything out about the bonus item in his on-line commentary, other than maybe a pat on the back.

Actually, the article should be about the Wild game against Calgary, so I guess if that's your approach, you could argue he shouldn't be mentioning Gopher basketball at all. Either way, I wasn't trying to start an argument about the author's thoughts about the Gophers, I just thought it was neat that we generated some excitement from a collection of 18000 staunch hockey fans over in St. Paul. For the record, I enjoy Mike Doyle's takeaways after Wild games (unless its after a really bad loss, in which case I read them to laugh at his attempts to put positive spin on the game), and his love of his alma mater and distaste for the Rouser will not inspire me to boycott his column.

I root for the Gophers and SCSU both. I will root for the Huskies over the Gophers in hockey when they play head to head. Would like to see them win the WCHA. It would not upset me if the Gophers pulled out the regular season title since I am a big Gophers hockey fan as well.

In all reality though, the Gophers football and basketball teams are the most important teams to me.

Yeah, I think you are right. Just went and looked at the archive and it does seem to be pretty fee flowing. Pretty well written bunch of stuff too.

The best part about being a sports fan is that you can choose to root for any team at any time for any reason. You can cheer for them because you love them and want them to do well, you can cheer for them because it makes your spouse happy and you can cheer maliciously against them because it makes you feel all warm and fuzzy to see them suffer. It's your prerogative and how anyone else feels about it is moot.

That being said....GO GOPHERS!!

Same. I'm an SCSU alum, but I'm really not a big hockey fan, so it doesn't matter that much to me, I never went to one hockey game when I was a student.
