Souhan on Sunday Sports Talk ripping Jim Grey for the golf incident "The problem in our industry is that there is no bar you have to clear. If you want to be a doctor or lawyer you have to pass the bar exam, etc. In our industry the great reporters are working right along side the terrible ones."

You're right for once Jim.

He misspoke one word: ...In our industry the great reporters are working right along side the terrible ones." He said "...the terrible ones." He should have said "...us terrible ones."

Souhan tries so hard to be controversial. He use to write interesting columns. The past couple of years much of he writes goes way overboard. Too bad.

Has anyone else noticed that on the radio he tends to agree with everything Reusse says. I mean everything.

I really do like Reusse but I have lost a lot of respect for Souhan. He parrots Reusse way too much in my opinion.

Souhan can also be very very self righteous.

Souhan wrote a column critical of Tubby. It was deserved and that's his job. He would be a much better columnist if he would cut out the Shecky Green crap but that's style, not substance. In this case, he was right. Tubby has brought the Gophers to the bottom middle of the B10, which is consistent with his record (in real games) since 2004. If everybody thinks that's it's ok to pay somebody at an elite level to achieve mediocrity after four years, then we should be outraged. If not, Souhan has a point.

BTW, I like him better on air than in print. I like Reusse better in print than on air. I like both of them a lot better than Barreiro.

I don't know about other folks, but my problem with Souhan isn't that he wrote a column chastising Tubby Smith. Rather, my problem is that he's shown himself to be a petulant and ill-informed ass on several occasions. His attempts at coverage and commentary last March were like blueprints in bad journalism. And when he got rightfully nailed for it, he whined like a crybaby.

If Souhan wants to be negative, that's fine. But for him to preach to anybody about what good journalism looks like is the height of irony.

If Souhan ever said anything credible about college athletics....people would be much less apt to jump all over him for jumping all over a coach that has arguably been the best coach in the last 30 years.

FOT? Is that you?

For me, his 'Baldy McWhimperson' article at Tourney time last year was the low water mark. He has a lot of legit research and writing to do before I take him seriously again.

The irony of this quote though, is to quote Cesar Romero, "absolutely delicious".

That would still be Clem Haskins. Despite the NCAA sanctions, his coaching record was pretty good, most years.

Besides that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

Yeah, besides the rampant academic fraud that tarnished the image of the entire institution...

This is redundant, but...

Crap writer. Crap commentator. Crap content. Amazing he gets paid for this crap.

Clem had a solid coaching record at Minnesota.

I'm sure a lot of coaches would have an amazing record here with the rampant cheating that was going on. If you are of the ilk that the end justifies the means, then get off my side.

It's the same old story that has been played out here for a long time. If there is reason to write a negative column, go ahead; well written criticism is welcome and may engender good debate, but at least write an informed column.

I stated that (EXCEPT FOR THE NCAA SANCTIONS) Clem had a decent COACHING record.

Souhan lecturing other people on journalistic standards is like:

a. Patrick Reusse telling somebody to "put down the cheeseburgers"

b. Devoe Joseph speaking at a D.A.R.E. event

c. Sid castigating somebody for not retiring, but continuing to inflict their presence on a helpless populace

d. Rick Reilly critiquing somebody for mailing it in.

e. All of the Above.

Setting aside the NCAA mess, Clem Haskins has the best coaching record (results) of any Gopher coach of past 30 years. That was the ? answered.

He had a record of 111-100 (42-76) in games that counted.
Stellar

Even if you include his illegal teams he was still under .500 in conference play.

People are ripping on Tubby for not winning 12+ in conference play, but somehow forget that in 11 seasons playing 18 conference games and 2 seasons playing 16 conference games....Clem got his team to 12 conference wins just once (and it was completely illegal). Clem had 1 top 3 Big Ten finish...and it was in his 11th season.

Give Tubby a little bit of time maybe is I guess what I am trying to say.

Whatever else you want to say about Clem, the guy could coach.

I'll never forget his 1st 4 years. That was my favorite Gopher team ever. Burton, Coffey, Melvin, Shik, then Lynch the next year. As frosh, they sucked, but they played hard. As sophomores they were like this year's Timberwolves. They lost just as often but by 5-10 instead of 20-30. The 3rd year they made the NCAAs and lost to Duke. The 4th year they went to the Elite 8. That was a monstrous coaching achievement, and I don't recall hearing about any academic fraud at that point in time.

Clem won 1 more game in B10 than he lost. That's 1986 through 1999 seasons.

I could be wrong...but he was 112-120 during that time period in Big ten play.
