per Souhan:

Ryan's hiring was a function of savvy, not power or money. He is a symbol of hope to Minnesota because there is no reason the Gophers can't eventually find their own Bo.

In retirement, Ryan offers hope that Wisconsin will remove itself as one of the obstacles between the Gophers and Big Ten basketball success. The Big Ten has become a daunting conference for an unproven young coach such as Richard Pitino. Ryan’s departure offers one less problem, or excuse.

Ryan’s story is hopeful because he did things the way they could and should be done at Minnesota. He left behind no recruiting scandals. He won without competing with Duke and Kentucky for the biggest high school stars. He developed skills and basketball intelligence.

Go Gophers!!

I'm sure there are a quite a few schools who wish they could find someone like Ryan. Its not that easy. Wisconsin was very fortunate that the hire worked out so well. You can find someone who meets the criteria you are looking for and think they will do the job and it still may not work out. Or you may give up on someone to early and they have success elsewhere.

Wasn't the story Maturi tried to hired Bo at Denver but was overruled by his boss?

You have to kiss a few frogs before you find a prince. To their credit, Wisconsin made two astute hires in a row. It was a nice happenstance that they were both available and local within the state lines. Gophers could have done the same thing by hiring Tim Miles instead of Smith (granted, they'd have had to go across the border a short distance).

jumping the gun big time on Miles, bad. all we know about him at the big ten level is he is capable of losing his cool and getting ejected from a fricking ncaa tournament game when his team needed him the most. outside of that, lots of fans in lincoln aren't feeling the love that kfan bobos seem think miles can do no wrong.

That and NDSU and UW-M are not on the same level, especially back then when that was year three at D1 for the Bison. Colorado State was a good stepping stone from NDSU.

If I were Minnesota, I'd be tracking the career of Chad Walthall.

I wonder how Souhan, with that great college basketball mind of his, would compare Bo to Baldy McWimperson?

What a d:ck, he writes a column about Ryan and he still has to take a jab at Pitino.

Saying the B1G has been tough on a young unproven coach not much of jab at all. GHolers have taken better shots at Pitino than that.

Every other sports writer shows soupcan what could be done at the strib.
