Tier 6 is the land of blue-chip ratio non-qualifiers (plus Oregon, which landed in Tier 5 with its Pac-12 counterparts). Bud Elliott, who came up with the statistic, admits a team will eventually break the streak of champions hitting the 50 percent threshold. Among these three teams, who can make history?

The Badgers are the obvious answer. They return the 34th-most production in the country, and they have a record of challenging for a playoff spot. Wisconsin has won 10-plus games in five of the last six years. If the Badgers can figure out an offensive replacement for Jonathan Taylor, get slightly better QB player from Jack Coan and be a little better in the secondary, this team will have a shot. Back-to-back games with Michigan and Notre Dame will determine the direction of the Badgers’ season.

Oklahoma State has had an, uh, interesting offseason. But this sets up as Mike Gundy’s best team since 2011 when the Cowboys came one surprising late-season loss away from playing for a national title. The Big 12 is tough, but Oklahoma State returns the ninth-most production nationally and draws Iowa State and Texas at home. The Cowboys will travel to Norman, but they do so after a game with Kansas while the Sooners will have to clash with the Cyclones. It’s not unreasonable to project a 12-1 season for Oklahoma State, which likely sends it to the playoff.

Minnesota is the final team with an outside shot to crack that blue-chip ratio ceiling. The Gophers proved they could hang with the nation’s best teams a season ago – wins over Auburn and Penn State – and they bring back the bones of that roster. Plus, the schedule sets up well. Outside of a trip to Madison, the Gophers’ toughest games of the season all take place in Minneapolis.

Go Gophers!!
