I sometimes think that looking at how teams ranked within their conference to see if there is any trends on the kind of coach we are getting. So I thought I would composite a list of how Jerry Kill did at Northern Illinois.

2010
#1 Scoring offense and Total Offense (#1 in Rushing Offense)
#1 Scoring Defense and #3 in Total Defense (yards)
#2 Turnover Margain
#1 Least amount of Penalties
#1 Fewest Sacks Given Up
#3 in Time of Possesion

2009
#3 in Total Offense (#1 in Rushing Offense)
#3 Scoring Defense and #1 Total Defense
#2 Turnover Margain
#1 Sacks
#1 Sacks Given Up
#3 Penalties
#3 Time of Possesion

2008
#2 Rushing Offense
#1 Scoring Defense and #1 Total Defense
#5 Turnover Margain
#2 Sacks
#3 Sacks against
#3 Penalties

At Northern Illinois, his teams ran the ball extremely well, played really good defense and rarely hurt themselves. That is usually the recipe for a winning program and a fairly good indicator of a good coach. I realize there might be some questions regarding his ability to recruit and that his name isn't going to put the Gopher program on the map. But the guy has proven he can coach.

P.S. We hired a husky mustacheod man named Kill who loves to run the football and play defense. We are a Big 10 team, how can that not be a good fit?

On, another one. He hasn't had a team that wasn't plus on the turnover margain since his 2nd season at Southern Illinois (8 seasons) and he played against 5 Big 10 teams in his tenure at Northern Illinois (all away games), and he went 2-3. The three losses on the road in the Big 10 (with a MAC team) were all within 1 score.

I have no doubts about his on-field coaching abilities. Recruiting is going to be the question and we'll have to wait on that. I have no doubt we are going to see a more disciplined product on both sides of the ball and sideline coaching that will be consistent and have an idea about time management.

In other words, there is going to be a lot of fight in our dog. Unfortunately, we are going to be facing some pretty big dogs.

I sometimes think that people stick to stats when there is no other option. The most important stat is win/loss. 6-7, 7-6, 10-3 at NIU. However, 2-12 against teams with winning records over those three years. This is important because we will be the lesser team often against the rest of the Big Ten. What indication do we have that Kill can beat better teams? None.

Remember, little dogs are real good at biting big dogs in the balls.

You can get to 3 conference wins by discipline and execution alone.

Has a defensive background and focuses on playing good defense. Check another criteria off my list.

And then the big dog grabs the little dog by the neck and shakes him within an inch of his canine existence. LOL.

This is all going to boil down to whether or not Kill can get 3-star guys he can coach up and the occasional 4-star skilled position kid. I think his X and O ability will the be best we've had since Stoll (hard to count the 2-year Holtz stint). Mason did well on the offensive side of the ball, but his defenses stunk.

I thought some one posted last night that this past
Season he beat three teams with a winning record. Why does this stat about only beating two teams with a winning record over three years keep popping up?

Because folks want to bury this guy before he even sets foot into Bierman. The internet has made everyone an expert.

I wanted a higher-profile guy, but it's hard to knock Kill's record as a program-builder.

Really, all the haters should be mad at Maturi for saying that he was going to bring in a big name and setting expectations high. Kill, himself, has proven to be a good coach and deserves a chance.

I agree that Maturi channeled his "inner Brewster" when he blurted out the "Tubby Smith hire" line. It's a line I'm sure he'd like to take back.

What about the other night? He lost the MAC Championship game as an 18 point favorite.

Being one of the better teams in the MAC is like Paul Harvey's saying that the Common Man uses in his intro on KFAN.

"They're the lousiest of the best and the best of the lousiest...."

There is so much win in this statement. Made my day. Welcome to Jerry Kill!

Here's my favorite stat:

NIU's Big Ten record under Kill: 2-3 (.400)
Purdue's Big Ten record under Danny Hope: 6-10 (.375)
Illinois' Big Ten Record under Zook: 16-32 (.333)
Minnesota's Big Ten record under Tim Brewster: 6-24 (.200)

If Kill can be a middle of the pack (.400) coach against the Big Ten with NIU talent and resources, I am excited to see what he can do with Big Ten talent and resources.

LOL!

His 2 wins came against bottom of the barrell B10 teams and he actually lost to a Tim Brewster coached team.

That was Kill's first game as NIU coach. And the huskies the year before went 2-10.

To be fair, that was Brewster's best team. Not saying a whole lot, I know.
