Hey everyone,

I'm a first time poster on the bball thread, I spend most of my time over on the fball side. I just have some questions about this team. I don't know much about bball, I never played organized bball in my life.

I'm mostly wondering what players will/should play well with each other? I always hear about how this players style of play will fit perfectly with the way this guy plays. so what kind of combinations will we see throughout the season?

Also, why wouldn't Ralph and Colt be considered Centers? I would think they would both be plenty tall and big enough? especially with Royce and Trevor (possibly) being the two staples at PF.

Thanks and I'll hang up and listen.

It is very important to this team that Trevor be eligible to play this year. He is, by far, the most most capable person to play the power forward position. Watching White play, I wonder if it isn't to soon to ask this freshman to play at the 4 spot. He has the size but he doesn't seem to play with the required aggressiveness. He may be more effective as a small forward this first year. I feel his game is better suited to the 3 spot. He would be very difficult to guard at that position. Adding his size to the small forward position would make this team very big and strong around the basket. However, if Trevor can't play, I soppose Royce will be forced to push and shove with the big boys. In any case, there will be times when Johnson, Iverson or Sampson will have to fill in. It's nice to have this depth.

PG - Al until cobbs earns his job
SG - LW until Devoe earns his job
SF - DJ - until Royce earns his job
PF - Mbakwe
C - RSIII

Gophers most likely to...
Average 20 points - Lawrence Westbrook
Average 10 rebounds - Trevor Mbakwe
Average 10 assists - Al Nolen
Unfairly Get Bench Splinters - Paul Carter/Rodney Williams Jr
Lead the Big 10 in Turnovers - Lawrence Westbrook
Lead the Big 10 in Blocks - Damian Johnson
Big 10 Freshmen of the Year - Royce White
Hurt Himslef Running Laps - Dominique Dawson
Fade into obscurity - Devron Bostick

LOL Stroms, you should post more

I'll add this about RSIII. My feeling is that he thinks of himself as a power forward because he has his eye on the NBA and that might be where he would find himself in that league. Sadly, it also makes him sound non-agressive; when he embraces the center position in Tubby's system I think he will put up some big numbers, not 10 and 10 but perhaps 8 and 7. Iverson is a center for sure, and will have spurts of greatness but probably not usurp RSIII for the start.

Hooligan also asked about style of play, and who might work well together. We talked about that a lot more when Monson was here because he didn't have the same kind of control over his players. That is why Westbrook and Johnson didn't get many minutes as freshman because Monson wasn't giving them good direction, IMHO. With Tubby, it seems, it is Tubby ball, which means defense first, or you ride the pine. In general, this team has been thought of my many pundits and talking-heads as a team that will only be successful when they score in transition. I think that is also a hold over from earlier days that will change with Orlando at the helm.

If the Gophs can get some consistant outside shooting from the 1,2 and 3 positions it could really open-up the inside for scoring by Ralph, Colt, Trevor and Royce.

Good call SS. But they can't get caught watching the paint dry!

I'm not sure we have a money player the caliber of Jimmy Chitwood, either.

Good point. Greatest basketball movie player character ever.
