What a sad, sad story. I imagine the photographer who took this picture just minutes before this young kid died never expected this photo would be so powerful and capture so many emotions. I'm sure this picture will forever hang in this young man's family's house. What a tragic story.
Having worked with some high school athletes, I am concerned about the use of body building and performance supplements, leading to health problems not usually seen in kids this age. While not necessarily involved in these cases, the use of things like jacked reportedly extend the stamina to exert athletically which may be a problem for a kid with an undiagnosed heart problem. A kid I have worked with developed some serious digestive and respiratory problems I think are related to his use. Has he quit? I don't think so.
I am trying to be careful here as of course I do not know what happened in these cases but two kids from the same school raises questions about the culture. The use of these supplements is rampant in the high schools (the kid I worked with said most the athletes on the football and wrestling team use them - and its not a "big" school). Parents and coaches need to be aware.
Here's a link to the Ohio high school league on the topic. http://www.ohsaa.org/medicine/nutrition.htm
