Ryan Burns had a lot of bad news to share on Gopher Gridiron Radio. First of all, Curtis Dunlap has "work to do" before he gets back on the field. The way Ryan talked about this it sounds like it has to with more than just conditioning. Unfortunately Daniel Faalele also has work to do to play and Ryan said he had a "significant" injury against Wisconsin and though he was back for the Spring had a long way to go to be ready to play ( I don't know how the injury could have been that significant and he was able to practice in the Spring?). Ryan thinks the Oline could be: LT Schlueter, LG Olson, C Schmitz ,RG Ruschmeyer, RT Andries. Ryan actually thinks that line would be good, but worries about the depth at both Tackle (doesn't think Guedet is ready but likes his future) and interior OL where it would be Boe or Beier.

Ryan also dropped a bomb that a "projected Gopher starter" has already opted out. He said he's waiting for the player to announce it, but has heard he's just done with football altogether. I feel like I know who this player is by some things that were said on the podcast, but not sure it is right to speculate if Ryan won't say it himself. Ryan also said that he doesn't expect St-Juste to opt out but could see him doing so because he's already like 23, would perform well at the combine, and has good tape.

All of this lead to Ryan being down on the chances of the Gophers winning the West season.

There was some good news on the recruiting front to end the podcast. Ryan believes/has heard that the Gophers lead for Davon Townley. More interesting there is a major recruit that is supposedly flying to Minnesota (it was either for this weekend or next weekend, I can't remember) that Ryan was pretty excited about. This is a big deal because this has to be done on a recruits own dime right now and they can't even meet with coaches, just walk around campus/facilities by themselves. The Gophers are also still recruiting a number of players committed to other schools right now, but the only names Ryan mentioned were the LB committed to Michigan and a name I had not heard before in Caden Fordham who is committed to NC State.

Thanks for sharing. My guess is that there will be similar reports across all the conference as the v3 season reboot kicks in.

Really tough to hear if true about Big Dan.

It's Ortiz that is flying here this weekend. He called it an "official" visit, but if the NCAA says it is a dead period then I don't think the school can pay for it?

The guy Ortiz says he's still talking to is a 4* LB that is a "10 Lock" to Michigan per 247, maybe that's who he was talking about?

I wonder if Faalele's "injury" suddenly got worse as an excuse to opt-out, back when it was looking like there wouldn't be a Big Ten season. Similarish sentiments for Dunlap? Wild guessing.

Ruschmeyer was a walk-on for the 2017 class. Glad he is getting a chance, hope he does well. If indeed he is the week 1 starter.

Boe and Beier are scholarship players from the 2018 class. Boe was the bottom ranked, but still a 3* by 247, which listed him as coming in at Center and weighing 250lbs! Beier was a 3* "All-District" from Ohio. Neither have had a chance to do anything the last two seasons.

I guess I would be a little disappointed if Beier couldn't beat out a walk-on, but maybe Ruschmeyer has done a lot of great things and was just overlooked? I guess we'll see.

Wonder if the projected starter opt out is either Bryce Witham or Micah Dew-Treadway?

Only reason I throw those two names out is, 2020 would be their sixth calendar year's out of high school, even though they are still eligible. Neither likely to be NFL players? So maybe choosing to move on in life, and go out with a bang against Auburn in the bowl game?

When I had done my analysis of scholarships a while ago, I also had Witham as the 86th scholarship player this year. But I can't remember if that was assuming JDS coming here or not.

I wonder if the Projected starter opting out is Dunlap. That could explain the entering the transfer portal one day, and then withdrawing the next. Maybe he wants to be closer to home, so entered the transfer portal, but then realized he's done with football altogether so withdrew himself?

Though I guess that doesn't really fit since Burns said earlier in the show that Dunlap has a lot of work to do to get into playing shape.

Tough deal on the bad news. Guess its next man up that will be a better next man up than with the Vikings. They don't do a good job of stepping up.

Right, so thinking (hoping) it wasn’t Dunlap or Faalele. Trying to think who would’ve likely started yet was “done with football”. Went with older guys.

I believe nothing until it happens.

"Hey - I have inside information - and I will be happy to share it with you as long as you pay me!"

And then these guys drop all kinds of juicy hints in hopes of enticing more people to part with their hard-earned money in hopes of getting the "inside information."

And I have a great tip on the 3rd race at Canterbury.

It's all rumors until it is confirmed.

The opt out is in the wr room, not cab. That should be enough for everyone to figure out who it is. This person just has different interests and is quitting football.

Potential starter? I guess DD then. Maybe he knows Bateman is back? Maybe thought they were hoping JDS would come here? Wild guessing

Yes, Ortiz is here this weekend. But Burns also said there's a "big time" recruit visiting next weekend, too.

Has nothing to do with anyone else, hes just moving on from football.

Wasn't to pleased with his punt and kick returns anyways. Couple of muffled attempts. I wonder who will take over

Thanks for the info. Sounds like Dunlap may have grade issues based on what Burns said and his recent desire to transfer.

PR is one of the toughest jobs in FB. I agree he made me nervous at times, but he's been one of the better Gopher returners I can remember. I'll also never forget the historic TD against Wisconsin. That really busted the game open.

I think Potts and Cam Wiley have returned kickoffs in the past. Wouldn't be surprised to see Ky Thomas back there either, although I have zero inside knowledge. Punts, I believe Emilian and Jackson both returned in HS, but it's a tough job for a true Frosh. I'm not remembering who the backup was last year. An intriguing choice would be Williamson if he can catch them.

Yeah he said it was Jaydon Hood.

Anything noteworthy from the latest show?
