MINNEAPOLIS - The latest statistics show crime at the University of Minnesota's Twin Cities campus has dropped significantly for most serious offenses since 2006.

Burglaries, vehicle thefts, robberies and alcohol citations were all down in 2008 compared with the two previous calendar years, while violent sex crimes held about steady.

For example, alcohol-related arrests were near 400 in 2006 and 2007, but fell to 290 in 2008. Burglaries dropped from 303 in 2007 to 197 in 2008.

The university published the data earlier this month in compliance with the Clery Act — a federal law requiring universities to publish select crime statistics.

University Deputy Police Chief Chuck Miner attributed some of the reductions to improved police methods and technologies, including computer analysis of crime trends.
